I've always said it is a classic case of government stupidity that you have to pay if you want to go and pick up your mail but they do home delivery for free.

It would be much more profitable if they built a little bigger post office and you would just have to come and get it or pay if you wanted home delivery. If you didn't pick it up after a month, they could deliver it and send you a bill for the delivery.

I have to agree that I cannot stand going through all the junk mail, which is why I gladly leave that part to the wife. If you don't want mail delivered to your place just get a post office box and pick it up at your leisure. More fuel would be burned if everyone had to pick up their mail at the PO. And, think about the traffic jams which would likely be beyond anyone's wildest imaginations if everyone went to the PO to pick up their mail, even if there was enough parking and lobby space to accomodate the hoardes. Think, too, of the incredibly long drives that many rural folks would have to make to get their mail. And, what about the aged and infirm - who would deliver their mail? The old rain, hail, sleet, or snow guys and gals labor long and hard for everyone, while providing us with some outstanding service, and get home later than most people might imagine.

That's exactly what we did for three days during the Rodney King riots. A lot of people didn't show up but those of us that did cased the mail for all the routes. The people came to the post office & the clerks would come to us & we would pull the mail & give it to the clerks. It worked well enough that the mail was not too badly backed up.

It would work better if they built more smaller post offices so that they would not be too far for the people to have to go.

How did this turn from the USPS to me driving my SUV?[?][?][?]

You're all speaking from a personal, mostly private perspective. And in some ways, you're right. However, there are lots of people who get lots of mail, and almost all of it important to their business, their lives (just try being late with the photo of a new grandchild and you'll see what I mean).

Fact is, first class mail has declined substantially when compared to what we call 'business mail'. Business mail consists of catalogs (the volume of which is increasing dramatically every year), boxholders, and mail that is soliciting your money or trying to sell you something. Here's how you can tell the difference between first class mail and bulk rate business mail.

First class mail will say it's such on the letter (or in the case of magazines it will say 'periodical'), or else will display a stamp or imprinted postal rate charge. Bulk rate mail (which mails for much less than first class) will say "Presorted Standard Mail" or something very similar. Boxholders require even less to mail than other mail, since they're addressed to the box only, and not to individuals. Mail carriers do not like delivering boxholders, since they require much more work and time to case, and must go in every box on the route. They make for a longer workday.

Occasionally, someone will get upset because they're receiving so much bulk rate mail, and will rubber band a batch of it together and write 'refused' or 'return to sender' on it. Truth of the matter is, the bulk rate postage they've used to send the letter to you, is insufficient for the USPS to return it to the sender. So your mail carrier simply picks up that bundle or piece of unwanted mail and tosses it into his UBBM (Undeliverable Bulk Business Mail) tub, whereupon it, that is the paper, will be recycled.

And finally, you wouldn't believe how much mail some private individuals receive. We're talking pounds of mail. It's as if their hobby is collecting catalogs and UBBM on a daily basis. We're paid to deliver it though, so we don't mind. However, in my own opinion, I think the greater the number of businesses possessing your address and even a little financial information about you, the greater your risk of identity theft (although I can't cite any studies supporting that).

The USPS is a 'universal' service. That is, it will, indeed it must, deliver mail to anyone and everyone in this nation, regardless of color, creed, nationality, and where they live. And that's regardless of whether it's profitable or not. The USPS delivers almost 43 percent of all the mail delivered on this entire planet, daily. The USPS employees nearly one million people, and is currently the greatest employer of minorities and veterans in this nation.

Working for the USPS is a good job. And vets are given, right off the bat, a 10 or 15 percent advantage when taking the test. Most of us are proud to work for the USPS, and it's kind of cool when you get that paycheck that says, U.S. Goverment printed right on it.

Nobody needs mail twice a day, and I'm sixty-four and never remember it being delivered twice a day. I'm not even saying you need mail once a day or once a week. However, until you or someone else can come up with a plan that will save the USPS money then nothing is going to change.

The facts are that postal personnel "usually" stay busy with sorting and processing incoming and outgoing mail. If service personnel are not detailed to route delivery, they will have other tasks that relate to a great many other functions such as finance, directory, or administration. It is not like these people have little to do for the day, as a norm. Employees generally stay very, very busy with functions that need to be tended to in a timely, highly organized manner on a day to day basis. This, so that they will not be locked into a position of hurry-up-and-wait, or wait-and-hurry-up every other day like clockwork - talk about creating a funny-farm - whew!

If it was feasible to deliver mail every other day in terms of saving money, fuel, or time, then it would most likely be done. However, to create an unbearable hardship on postal personnel for the sake of accomodating those who want a different sytem of mail delivery would result in bigger financial and morale problems.

Your idea, on the surface, seems to have merit, but it simply would not be taken into serious consideration unless you could present a wizard like plan to someone like the Postmaster General of the United States, if we still have one.

I'm with Kramer, I want, so bad, to QUIT the mail. The majority of clutter in my house is from junk mail. I really wish that they would allow UPS/FEDEX/Whoever to use the mailbox so that the occasional non-junk mail that I get could be sent by another service.

We pay everything electronically and get statements from all accept about 3 (all local utilities).

The USPS is THE only self sufficient entity of the Federal Govt.

Imagine if DOD was that smart? Merge Department of Energy with DOD.....DOD creates electricity with nuclear reactors....sells it to the people. The money they receive...funds their operations.

    Silly idea really.[B)]

I like it the way it is now. Each day my neighbors and I meet for a "Who got who's mail today" swap fest. Helps us all stay close.

    True story,
At a Baltimore Oriole baseball game my group was settled in our seats, comfy and waiting for the start. Two folks gruffly demand we move because "We're in their seats!". We show tickets and politely explain their seats are further down. As they shuffle down the steps what are both wearing? Jackets emblazoned with
    UNITED STATES
    POSTAL SERVICE
Their confusion then made perfect sense.[:o)]

I remember hearing talk of ending Saturday delivery service. That hasn't happened yet. Wouldn't bother me if they went to a every other day delivery, but like others say, it would probably cause a lot of headaches within.

This is true the USPS is ran on the money we buy postage stamps with. Cutting the mail to run every other day would probably be more difficult than running once a day 6 days a week.

Twice a day home delivery was "temporarily" suspended by President Truman 1n 1950 because of the Korean War.

I've never heard of twice a day mail delivery. Thanks for the note, but somehow I'd venture to say most people probably never experienced it, but then when I was seven years old my priorities were playing cowboys and Indians, or Soldier, Sailor, or Marine fighting the Germans, Japs, or Koreans. Just in case someone dosen't know.

If you don't get Carrier delivery to your home and and are further than half a mile from the Post Office you are entitled to free Post Office Box. They won't tell unless you ask.

Quote " Customers who have no way of receiving mail other than at the Post Office can get rent-free. Small (Size 1) Post Office Boxes are available at no cost to customers whose live more than one-half mile away from the contract mail delivery route, or whose residence or business is within a quarter mile of the Post Office. To qualify, customers must provide identification and proof of physical residence, such as a utility bill.

Regulations outlined in DMM 508.4.6. For more information on Fee Group E eligibility, see DMM 508.4.6.2-3."

I heard long ago that in Jolly Ole England, you could get a letter delivered faster than you could make a phone call. I guess that meant their postal was that good and telle was that bad. Anyone else heard that? Tom

PS; How many believe that the 42 cent "forever" stamp will last over 2 years? T

I suspect part of the problem may come from the government dipping into the funding generated by the mail. The legislature will authorize the increase in the postal rate and then when the post office has extra money, they take from that surplus to pay for other government services. As expenses rise again, they just raise the rates again until there is a surplus. then the cyle continues.

I would go and pick up my mail at the post office if they didn't charge me for doing so.

I heard that in big cities, there was twice a day mail delivery because of the sheer volume of mail and the fact that the post office was in the same area.

Vets. are given a 10-15 point head start, Except in Tacoma Washington. The head post boss at that time '90-'91 was a Vietnamese.
Told me and several other nam vets that if we wanted the extra points we should have applied 3 years sooner, it was to late now.
Dang VC might even been NVA for all I know. Should have shot him and claimed it was a flash back. Thought of that too late.[:D][:D][}:)][:D][:D]
