7mm mag vs. .300 win mag

I am one day away fron purchasing a remington 700 bdl, but can not make up my mind on which caliber to get. 7mm rem mag or the .300 win mag. Looking at the ballistics it looks like the .300 mag has more energy at closer ranges but it looks like the 7mm evens out at farther ranges. The gun will be used for whitetail all the way up to elk. I would like some opinions or pros and cons. Thanks

    I am a big fan of .300WM and use it from antelope to elk/moose size game. IMHO, the .300WM is a better choice, almost as versatile as the 06. Without reloading, you can get 100G to 175G for 7MM Mag and 150G to 240G for .300WM.

    I have a 7MM Weatherby Magnum, and it outperforms all the (factory).30s, beyond 600.

    Although I would dearly love to have a .378/.300 Weatherby.

    I love the 7MM Mag after the 30/06 its my second choice for large game. However going with one of the Magnum calibers is going to cost you for ammo. Have you considered the .280 Rem or any of the non Magnum Calibers. Regular Centerfire ammo has went up this week $2.00 a box here.

    30 caliber has more bullets from 100 to 250 grains available. 300 Win Mag has won LOTS of 1000 yard matches.

    Go with the 300, better performance all the way around and it cost the same to shoot

    The .300 will outperform the 7mm hands down.

    So do I...kind of. I have a .300 Win Ackely Improved and a 7mm SAUM. I think the .300 Win Mag is one of my all time favorite calibers.

    Well I have decided to go with the .300 win mag. I cant wait to get it tomorrow... I think i will not catch much sleep tonight [:)]. I thank everyone for the quick responses and i do plan later in life to pick up a 7mm mag. Thanks everyone

    I frogot i had one more question. Which bullet is best for whitetail deer up to 200 pounds? I have heard the 180 grains go through with no expansion. What is everyones opinion on a good .300 mag whitetail bullet? with a reasonable price to of course [:D]

    I own a 7mm Rem mag and my advice is to go with the tried and true 30/06.
    With the 06 you will have the advantage of much less expensive ammo for the vast majority of your needs and the ability to go with Hornady Light Magnum loadings for the times when you THINK you need .300 Win Mag performance.
    The 06 will be more comfortable to shoot (less recoil and muzzle blast) and there are more choices in ammo than you can shake a stick at. You'll shoot it more and consequently be more proficient with it.
    Like I said, I own a 7mm Rem mag ,,,,,,,,,,,,, I HUNT with a lever action .308!

    I use 180G for everything - antelope, deer (muley and whitetail), elk, etc ...

    my opinion is bias, I hunt with a 300 win mag I use 165 or 180 grain nosler bt. depending on the size of game i am hunting. get a limbsaver butt padd for it and you wont even notice the kick.
    If you ever plan on hunting in alaska or canada they will not let you use that '06.

    300 win mag is the minimum for most outfitters.

    At close yardage most magnums will just poke holes through the animal. if i think i am going to be hunting in the timber where a shot under 150 yds is more possible than not. i will load up a handfull of 220gr nosler partitions. load them down to where they are almost subsonic. I have been told the slower the bullet the more energy transfer at close range anyway.
