Need info on 1981 8.2 Detroit Desiel Engine

    Yeah they were ok. Pretty gutless, but they are naturally aspraited and were something like 140-160 horsepower if I remember correctly. They are a four cycle engine(as opposed to the genuine Jimmy Diesels, which were two cycles) that was designed to compete with the lower cost medium duty engines like the Caterpillar 3208. In the sales brochures of the day they are called the "Fuel Pincher".

    I have never cared for Detriot Diesels!

    But my experience is with alot bigger than the 8.2!

    Mine was all big trucks!

    We had a bucket truck at work that had the 8.2. I understand that certain 8.2's were designed to idle for long periods, like a bucket truck. Our mechanic at work said they were not re-buildable.

    +1 on the usually not rebuildable. They are not a sleeved block so if cylinders are worn would have to bore and then sleeve and is too costly. If it is just a head gasket you might get lucky. But there has to be a serious reason if it is a head gasket.
