How easy is it to aquire 8X56 ammo? Anyone know what the availability is?

8mm Mauser is actually 7.92x57 (a rimless round)
The 8x56 he's asking about is most likely the 8x56R (Rimmed) round. Graff & Sons might have some sporting ammo for it (IIRC they list the brass cases if you reload), but most of what's available is ww-2 Mil Surplus.
If you get the rifle/purchase some ammo, make sure that you get at least 1 clip to go with it. They use a "en-bloc" clip that falls out the bottom of the rifle when the last round is chambered. Without the correct clip, it can only be used as a single shot.0 -

Uh, no, it's not. The 8x56 (rimless) is a Mannlicher design. There may well be some civilian Mauser rifles in this chambering, but it would not be any great number.

The rimless is not, to my knowledge, available through normal channels but is reasonably easy to fabricate from .30-06 or 7.92x57 brass.
If you mean one of the rimmed varieties, some of the Austro-Hungarian 8x56R WW2 milsurp has come in over the past decade from Hungary and Bulgaria. It's pricey, corrosive and a "one-shot deal" unless you can find a source for the Berdan primers. If a Kropatchek, it hasn't been made since the 1920s (Portugal), I've yet to see a specimen I'd consider trying to shoot even if these were not $6 - $10 collector items. Both of these can also be fabricated, albeit with some significant effort.0 -

Well i was looking at steyr m95's so i am assuming it is your standard austraian rifle round whether it is rimmed or not i have no knowledge of this. 0 -

The M-95 (military straight pull bolt action) origionaly used the 8x50R Austrian cartridge, these can be easly formed from 7.62x53R / 7.62x54R (Finnish or Russian designations of the same cartridge) brass. The 8x56R is the later version of the same cartridge. See my comments above. The x56 can also be formed from the 7.62x54R, but the neck will be a little short.

I would recommend loading new 8x56r from virgin brass. The mil-surp stuff is old and corroded. From the 50 rounds I fired, about every 1 in 5 would burn through the case wall and blast me in the face with hot gas. Not a pleasant experience, even with shooting glasses - it felt like being sandblasted.
Grafs sells new brass, and I think there are a few sources of .329 diameter bullets.

You can buy it on stripper clips here, nazi marked. Not cheap, but ive seen it at gun shows and such for a reasonable price.
