Dad burn chubby non-caring stupid-but VET!!!!!
My little Cocker Spaniel has food alergies. Having three kids means that she gets an occational treat that she shouldn't. Her ears get red....and she scratches them until horrible bloody sores are on her ears. She has been seen by the vet just down the road from the store and we have kept her on expensive ZD diet dog food and had prescriptions that cleared it up. I haven't had a problem for about a year....until now.
This idiot down the road WON'T see her....and WON'T give me the medicine that they KNOW will fix this. They will...later, with an appointment. I just can't see why the prednizone can't be given to me if I have had it in the past....and the fact that they KNOW she is in pain and could care less. I hate these people right now.

I'm up against something the same, LF. My wife and I split up a little over a year ago and in the very peaceful division of "stuff" I got the two of our four dogs that were "mine" (much as a dog is ever just property). I also got a fairly severe case of "finances", as in a limited amount of same. My dogs suffer comparatively mild but still unpleasant allergies that can be alleviated by either a single cortizone shot per mutt, or a week's dosage of some sort of steroids. Problem: each year the vet we've been using for the past twelve or so years insists on running tests, before prescribing the necessary meds. Needless to say the tests always conclude the same and the same meds are given the dogs.
This year -- no money for an office call, let alone tests, and just a little too much pride to go in and beg. I'd even be willing to sign a waiver against the possibility that, just this once, the itching my dogs suffer isn't due to the same cause it has been for every last year of my dogs' lives. Winter seems to be bringing some relief, but spring will come, with no improvement in the cash flow coming with it, at least not that I can see at this point. So -- I certainly feel for you.0 -

I know my mom has been through the same, but her vet must be a lot more compassionate.
Her pooch goes on prednisone once a year, and the vet simply calls in the scrip.

Marc,..we both know the horrors of Prednisone use..
LF..find a vet that will substitute some other drug for your dog..I take prednisone daily..it is probably only masking the allergies effects anyway..and its not doing your dog any good in the long run..its mainly a anti inflammatory drug.....Loko..0 -
Have you tried benedryl? I didn't spell that right but the allergy pills people take that also makes them sleepy. 0 -
I haven't tried Benadryl...I haven't heard anything good or bad about it. Purdy's ears have been trouble since day one. When we first got her I had to sleep in my son's bed when she was a puppy just so I could rub her ears.....she would wake up and whimper, scratching, wiggling the bed over and over and over during the nite. It was like having a newborn baby.
Her ears are long and hang down, giving NO chance of air getting inside. They also have lots of bumpy waves all on the inside....more than the typical Cocker Spaniel. I noticed this when I worked for a local dog groomer many years ago. It was a job I could do when the kids were little and I got home before they got out of school.
The thing that aggrivates me more than anything is the attitude the receptionist had. The....."whatever"....she gave off over the phone when I was trying to get Purdy seen. I just don't think I want to give my money to a place that can have that attitude when it comes to my sweetie being in pain. I haven't seen much better from other places I have delt with.0 -

Friends dog had the same problem, she was allergic to corn. Caused massive ear infections when she'd get any corn based foods... 0 -
Well depending on when was the last time you saw the vet and got a script, they just can't assume all factors are the same. 0 -
There's always the risk of prednizone dependance. Many dogs have become hooked on prednizone. Next thing you know, they're breaking in houses, shoplifting and selling their belongings to support their habit. They become very convincing liars to con a well-meaning vet into a prescription. It is an especially troublesome problem here in Appalachia. We call it the poor dog's herion. 0 -
You can get many dog medicines by mail order, your local farm store might have some.
I have got puppy vaccinations, rabies, kennel cough, antibiotics, parvo, distember all mailorder in the past. I used Vet Vax.0 -

I have a pug that has similar allergies and the Vet can not do anything for him. 100's of $$ later he is still red and scratches
100's $$$ in exspensive food that hasn't worked. me and the wife are at our wits ends with this poor dog. I feel your pain[V]0
