HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- Shooting a gun in the air is never a good
idea -- especially if someone lives in the apartment upstairs.
Police in Hagerstown, Maryland, report a man was shot in the leg
when a bullet came through his bedroom floor while he was in bed.
According to officers, 20-year-old Keith Dandridge says he didn't
mean to hurt anyone when he squeezed off the shot. Authorities say
the victim's injuries aren't life-threatening. Dandridge is now
charged with reckless endangerment and discharging a firearm within
city limits.

    This is a big issue here in Houston, Lots of News stories warning people not to shoot in the air for New Years. But they need to target the ads on the Spannisch Shtations.

    If you shoot almost perfectly straight up into the air, when the bullet comes back down it will not have enough speed or energy to do much more but raise a bump on your head. But if you shoot at an angle, so that when the bullet touchs down while still retaining some or much of the velocity given to it when it left the barrell, it can kill you.

    But either way, don't test it.

    I quit shooting into the air many years ago.

    I shoot into a dirt pile on my property on Independence Day and New Years Eve.

    I get a helluva charge outta making all that noise, real fast.

    I know of a couple ole' boys that were road hunting for deer...they had a 30-30 put a hole thru the floor with the windows rolled up. They couldn't hear good for about a month. They said that they never thought a 30-30 could sound like a 300 Win. Mag. untill that day
