Mount Rushmore

In the museum at Mount Rushmore, there are banners that show portraits of each president there. Each portrait has a quote attributed to that president.

Teddy Roosevelt's was something to the effect that each american should feel it is his duty to support his country as we fight for freedom in the world.

I googled and tried to find the exact quote but could not. Any help?

BTW....if you haven't been to Mount Rushmore then you are missing the most inspirational monument in our country...I bawled like a little baby there.

    Should any more former U.S. Presidents faces be added to Mount Rushmore EVER..... I say absolutely NOT....it is a piece of history and should remain as it is.....what ya think?

    I was also impressed with Mount Rushmore. The new center is not quite as personal as it was in the early 1980's, but still good.

    I would only suggest two other monuments that dwarf Rushmore for inspiration.

    1. USS Arizona - get on the first boat and approach the wreck at sunrise.

    2. The Wall - You do not need to have family, or even know a name to be humbled and feeling eternally indebted to those brave souls.

    I would also add the "Punchbowl" National Cemetery in Hawaii. Many tears shed there in a day long visit.

    I'm afraid The Wall would make me so angry that I'd burst something.

    Knowing all the men who died because of completely spineless, indecisive politically-aspirant "leaders", including our own LBJ...who, with that POS MacNamara would micro manage entire air campaigns down to each target, demand that the planes ingress and egress using the same routes each time...COMPLETE CRAP!

    all of which lead to the unnecessary deaths of so many of our bravest and best.

    I was just a pup, but I researched these things for years.

    Our ball-less government did not WANT to win that War. Just like this one, there was just too much money to be made for us to contemplate TOTAL VICTORY.

    I liked Mt. Rushmore, too, but no more so than similar monuments regarding leaders like that of Chief Crazy Horse, or Stone Mountain Georgia where our Confederate citizens Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and Jefferson Davis are memorialized.

    I am fortunate in that I live close to Mt. Rushmore. I can actually see it from my front porch and am usually there 2-3 times a year. The lighting ceremony they do during the summer months is very cool, and more so now that the director there is Indian and has had an influence on adding that native perspective as well.

    I second The Wall, but you know, I had that same feeling when I visited The Alamo as well a couple of years back. I am planning on visiting the Civil War Battle sites back east with the family in the next year or two and suspect it will be that same. I haven't been to Hawaii yet but if and when I do that will be on the agenda for sure.
