Just ordered Satellite Internet!
Finally made a couple of bucks this spring and feel comfortable ordering internet in the new house.
I will get setup on the 20th.
Gonna be getting it through Dish Network, but it is actually Wild Blue. $200 up front for equipment and $50 a month, but get $100 back due to a sale they are running.
My house can only get 1/2 speed dialup due to the phone lines in the area. I also only use a cell phone so by not getting a phone line and not paying a dial-up fee, I am about even and getting 10x faster than dialup.
Hope to be on here more often in a while.

Good for larger files, but initial requests to/from to start getting what you ask for will take 2 seconds, due to distance of travel, which also increases any lag you may experience in games. in other words, online games that demand perormance (quake, counterstrike, etc. or World of Warcraft and such) will provide an extreme vacuum in a small area.
Otherwise if you are in the boonies, its your only choice. If you have line of sight to neighbors, you can set up wireless networks between and share a single connection (which may make a leased line semi-affordable)0 -

I'm having it installed again next week. I tried it once and wasn't
at all impressed with it, but I don't think it was working properly
for some reason.
Their service department totally sucked..BIG TIME!! I was still on my
30 day trial period, and could only make it to day 15 before I told em
where they could shove it.
I know some people that it works well for, so will give it one more shot.0 -
Keep us posted on how you like it. If I ever get the log home built in NV, that's my plan also. 0 -

Same experience my FIL has with it. He's with Wild Blue. If it's raining he's off line. If it's a sunny beautiful day, he's off line. If a bird or plane flies over, he's off line. In fact he uses his dialup more than the sat. (ok a bird won't do it but you get the point[:o)]). He's had the "techs", and I use that word lightly, out several times with no improvements. They just give him the runaround when he calls. Their customer service is non-existant.
I really hope it works out better for you Ruger, but if they have a "window of excape" like spryor said then I'd sure use it enough to make sure it's gonna work for you during that time frame.
FIL waited too long. His worked ok until about 3 months into it.

My contract with wildblue ends 5-19-7. I gave up about a month and and a half ago and ate two months of service cost and went with another ISP. Many of the service people at wildblue do a great job but wildblue has more than it's fair share of lousy service people. Twice I waited for the repair techs to fix their non working mess and they didn't even show. Then I get charged for repairs. I get the service fee removed but still it was a hassle to wait twice for no shows and be billed for something that should have worked the first time and was never fixed.0 -

A must read Review page of Wild Blue customers.
Most of these sound real familiar.[:(]

Ben
Well, I was only concidering cancelling the install until
reading that link, but since they echoed the same experience I had a
couple years ago I just called and cancelled.
Although I'm only on dialup, I can plug right along, rain/sleet or
snow. no WB BS and excuses. Guess I'll keep it that way until a
better alternative comes along.
I cannot afford to be knocked offline for any length of time, so
dialup it is..for now.0 -
Jim Pratt my former business partner who is retired and spends six months in Thailand called me on his internet satallite phone from South east Asia and it was clear as a bell and he reported it is very reasonable. 0
