Sub Compact CCW Question
I am asking for opinions yet again![:D]
I am wanting to get a new pistol for carry only.
All of my current firearms are really too large for CCW use, especially in the summer in Florida.
My Ruger SP-101 revolver works, but I have never liked a wheelgun for carry because of the cylinder thickness, and the way it feels.
I want something that I can comfortably carry using a small of the back, or hi-ride, under an untucked polo type shirt.
Interested in 9mm, .40 S&W, or the ole .45 ACP!
I have been looking at Sig, HK, Springfield XD's, etc,..........any pros or cons, or other ideas, would be appreciated![;)]

do you want to carry it "cocked & locked", hammer down with a round in the chamber, or no round in the chamber? that would help narrow down which gun to get 0 -
Some gun is better than no gun at all.
Why not take a look at .380s and .32s ??

My summer carry gun is a Bersa .380 but I'm looking at buying an XD but can't decide between the compact .45 or sub-compact .40. Wish they made a sub-compact .45. 0 -
I also live in very hot weather, and have carried daily during the last five years.
I carry mostly a Seecamp LWS .32 ACP, but have also carried a S&W 686 in 4", a Beretta Tomcat, a Kimber Ultra CDP, a NAA Mini Magnum, and the latest, a S&W 340 Scandium Airlite loaded with .357 Magnums (Yow!!!).

I prefer a round in the chamber, safety off, and a DA first shot/SA,.......DAO is OK also.
Cocked, and locked is fine too.
9mm is as small as I prefer to go, even though I agree with the saying, "some gun, is better than no gun".0 -
If you already have a small revolver look at the S&W Chiefs Special I have the 9mm and it carries very well, has been reliable and decently accurate and it covers your DA/SA which your looking for.I dont carry it more often because my 642 is much lighter and fits in a pocket better.Mine has been very good though and they also offer it in .40 where you can find one but a pretty compact .45acp as well.If your willing to look at a 9mm though and are going to waistband it sincerely take a look at a S&W 3913 my buddy has one and it is a great compact 9mm.Not as small as my Chiefs Special but small just the same. 0 -
A CZ75B, is fine to carry that way, as is my Ruger KP-345,......as safe as a revolver fully loaded.
The firing pin can't strike the primer without pulling the trigger, which both are double action, first pull.
Thanks for the concern though.[;)]
Edit: Surely you realize I am talking about hammer down![:D]0 -
I carry a Kel-Tec P3AT most the time and a Kahr PM40 as well. A snubbie 38 lightweight breaks up the outline of the gun when in your pocket, because of the cylinder. It's a personal choice.[:)] 0 -
Glock 36 0 -
If it fits your hand, I also like the Glock 36...or the 26 in 9mm 0 -
fIRESTORM 380 for summer carry[:D][}:)] 0 -
As another poster mentioned, I have been looking at the XD .40 sub-compact.
I know nothing about the Springfield XD line, other than they give you a bunch of extra stuff with the gun.
I could care less if they are crap.
Anyone have any experience with the XD line?
I believe they are DOA,.....correct me if I am wrong.[;)]0 -
I have a XD40 Tactical. Great gun, accurate and reliable. I have also fired an XD45 Compact and liked it. 0 -
Have you looked at the Firestar 40 S&W? I have one. It is my discreet carry gun of choice. It is a great little pistol. It is considerably lass expensive than the Springfield XD; but, still gives you the punch of the 40 S&W. I've seen a few listed here on GB for very fair prices. 0 -
KAHR!
Smallest hi-power centerfire pistol available.
Or maybe a CZ 2075 RAMI?0 -
I carry a Beretta 9000S DAO as my Duty back up gun. You have 12 shots of 9MM+P in a gun not much bigger than a .380. It accepts Model 92 15 RD Mags as well and they sale an adapter to make it look flush, but it makes the grip to long for CC. Beretta discontinued the Models and basically just renamed them. Ive seen the replacements and prefer the old Model, I cant think of what they named the new Model. 0 -
Dudes...Have you seen the New HiPoints yet?
They have a lifetime warranty so don't worry if it doesn't work when you need it cuz you can send it back for free repairs.
Did you hear me dudes. Lifetime warranty. All the repairs you will ever need until you are tired of getting it repaired and throw it away.
Hipoints !!! check them out!!![:D][:X]0 -

That's my all-time favorite primary carry pistol. Beretta .32ACP is secondary.

Man,.....what a load of info!
Hobby, that HK P7, which I have seen, and heard a lot about, is not for me. I hate those "squeezegrip" safeties, and they are as ugly, or worse than the Glocks, to me anyway![:D]
I am a PIA, as I hate small guns, and this is going to be tough for me.
The Glock 36, I guess I could live with,.......the G26 looks too tiny for me. I know they have a great rep, but I hate the looks of them too.
Firestorm,.......I have never heard of, nor seen.
The Kahr's, I actually shot one of the .45's at my range. I don't know the model number, but it was small. I did like the looks of the gun a lot better than some others, but while I shot very well with it, and wasn't bothered at all by the recoil, it was also quite small for my hands, and the hard checkered plastic grip, tended to move around a lot. My trigger finger went through so far, that one shot almost cut my thumb web with my fingernail on my index finger,........and YES, I trim my nails every week. I have not so much a "ham hand", but I have long fingers.
The Kahr's also seem to be quite expensive, and I know nothing about them quality wise.
MVP seems to love Hi-Points, about as much as I do!![:D]
I wish I had some experience with the XD's, as they seem pretty nice for the money, but I have never known anybody that has owned one, much less had the opportunity to shoot one.
This is truly a tough decision,.......and I am nowhere near making it yet.
Guess I need to write some of these suggestions down, and go to a large dealers place, and hold some of them!0 -

I have an XD-40 4" and the XD-9 Subcompact. Fantastic guns and although I like my Glocks, I Like the XDs a little better. They are not DAO. If you are near Tampa, I would be glad to meet you at the range and let you try them out.
I also live in FL and just purchased a Kel-Tec PF-9 for concealed carry. The PF-9 is DAO, has a single stack 7 shot magazine and is much thinner than the XDs. I purchased an inside the waist holster today at the Lakeland gunshow and have been wearing this combo around today in a pair of shorts and an untucked polo. No imprinting and very comfortable.
Here are a few pics from my photobucket site

I like the looks of this pistol, and the options. I am a SS type!
I am confused though,........you are saying the XD's are not DAO, and all the info I am seeing says they are.
I would certainly prefer DA/SA, as that is what I am used to, by and large.
Thanks much for the invite to the range, but my odds of making it to Tampa this time of year, are very slim.
Very nice of you to offer though![;)]0 -
Check out a surplus CZ-82: 12+1 rounds of 9mm MAKAROV in a subcompact. There are lots of SD rounds available for this chambering, because there are a lot of guns coming into the US in this chambering. Polygonal rifling and a fixed barrel make this piece very accurate. 0 -
I live in a hot climate and I carry a glock 19 or a government 45. Weather conditions don't play a role for me on what I carry. Unless I'm wearing my pumps I carry my .32. 0 -

I have the Bi-Tone in the 9mm Sub-Compact and agree it is a nice look.
I didn't think they were DAO since the trigger pull is not a long slow pull like my Kel-Tec. The trigger pull on the XD is similar to the glocks. It is not like my P99 where the first shot is a long pull and the others are a short pull.
I like the grip safety in addition to the trigger safety on the XD line. I would think a range local to you would have an XD as a rental gun0 -
Belive it or not, with the size of Marion county,....I am in Ocala, we have virtually nothing in the way of ranges.
I belong to the only private pistol range here, and the other option is the Ocala National Forest range, where most times, is like being in a war zone. No range masters, much less "rental guns". We also have one indoor range, but it is all the way across the county from me, and have heard it isn't that great.
All I really need to do is dry fire, and be confident in the manufacturer, to buy one.
The DOA claim I made, came from looking at Davidson's site, as they list all the specs.

That is the link for what I am seeing, although they add a fancy name to the DAO tag![8D]
Edit: I can buy that gun for $479.99 from a source of mine.0 -
i think ocala is like 1.5 hours away from me, check the range out in my sig line, they are great there. Some of the guys working there are off duty policeman, and policeman have access to the range 24-hrs a day. you can rent full autos from them as long as you buy their ammo. they also have tons of rental pistols and other rifles. when i can afford it im going to rent the either the m-16 or the krinkov, im leaning towards the krinkov. 0 -
Isn't there a large gun store in Gainesville?
I paid $490 for the bi-tone XD-9 and $450 for the black XD-40. Saw a black XD-40 sell at the lakeland gun show today for $479.
Good luck in your search0 -
