I don't get your point, exactly. The parents don't want their children in harms way and "Abby" suggested that the parents encourage them to volunteer at the nearest VA hospital.
I'm not making the connection between the letter, the response, and the "country going down the drain."0 -
I get it pretty well.
Everyone wants all the freedoms and luxuries that come with being an American but they do not want to earn those rights or protect those rights. Nor do they believe their children should do so either.
No one these days knows what it costs to keep this country free. It takes men and women who believe in what they do as a calling...a way of life.

I make the connection just fine. My 17 year old son handed me the papers to sign. His mind was made up. My refusal would delay his departure only a few weeks.
Did I try and talk him out of his decision? Did I throw a fit? Cry? NO. I didn't even write Dear Bleepin' Abby about it. For cryin' out loud. All I did was make sure he talked to ALL the recruiters and make sure the Army was what he really wanted.
The U.S. Armed Forces need young people. Wimpy parents who try and talk their children out of enlisting ARE hurting the country. Dear Abby doesn't help any when she tells the parents to get the kids to volunteer at a VA hospital, so they can see the downside of serving.
Rain on parents like that, and Dear Abby too!0 -

Yep, that's the way I read it. Absolutely nothing wrong with those kids volunteering at the VA hospital and getting the whole picture so they go into their future with their eyes wide open. The mom's response soured me.0 -
Once kids turn 18 they can do whatever the heck they want to so telling a 16 or 17 year old that he or she cannot do something just delays events for the year or two before they reach majority. 0 -
Funny...I worked at a VA clinic one summer and it made me want to join all the more. Buy I guess that's me and the way I was raised. 0 -
I sent a reply to Dear Abby about that one...here it is:

I know many soldiers who have been injured and wounded in combat who would gladly do it all again if they were given the chance, because it's what they feel is right and good.
Don't bash the military just because you don't agree with the war. Support the military. They are the reason why you even have your "Dear Abby" column.

These are the same parents that, 40 years ago, helped their children dodge the draft with phony medical reasons, or shipped them to Canadia, where they could wait for a liberal to grant them amnesty for their treason.

So how exactly is enacting a police state, with the elitist rulers wiping their collective asses with the constitution, and terrorizing sovereign foreign countries that never attacked us or even could attack us if they wanted to, while our veterans are sitting in their own excrement at walter reed, and our own government rulers refer to them as stupid, preserving freedom and luxuries?

It is perfectly reasonable, today, for a parent to discourage their child from joining the armed forces. Bush and Cheney have proven that they are incompetent. The entire Iraq fiasco is a waste of blood and money.
No way I would want the life of my child in the hands of the current administration.
I have a hard time seeing that the Iraq disaster is in any way protecting our freedoms here in America.0 -
