There are some folks who are not happy with some things the NRA has done, but they are the only major voice for gun owners in this country.

I have been an NRA Life & Endowment member for many years and feel its worth it.

us hang on to our guns.

I don't think they're a bad organization. They might not do as much as we'd like, but they're able to do more than most other gun-rights organizations.

I'm on a pretty limited budget. I would not likely be a member right now if I were not required by my gun club to be a member....and I buy the $10/year associate membership that doesn't come with the magazine. On a better income (should come soon), I think I'll maintain at least the associate membership. I'm not that interested in the magazine anyway.

I recently joined as a lifetime member because I'm a disabled veteran, and the lifetime membership deal was too good to pass up ($25/quarter). I can afford that.

They talk good. They compromise good. They tell us they were victorious good. And that's about all folks.

I've been a lifetime member since 1964. Each year I give as a Christmas stocking stuffers, yearly memberships to my kids and granddaughters. It's my little contribution to what I feel helps us in our fight against the scum trying to take our guns away and I feel the NRA is our sword in this fight. They have always been the leader in the fight and no one has really shown me anything yet that has convinced me otherwise. I belong to other oranizations, GOA, CRPA and my local gun club and my old gun club in Arizona and still send my dues and contributions to them.

I think of it this way....If I didn't spend the $30+ in this manner, it would be handed it to the "do you want fries with that?" person in the little window at the local McDonald's and it makes me feel a little better to be spending it this way.......[^][^][:)][:)]

Thats fine..as far as it goes.

Just please stop pretending that you and they are fighting for the Second Amendment.
The history of the NRA since 1934 has been sordid.

Compromise and back room deals..all taking ever bigger chunks out of what some laughingly call "Gun Rights" in this country.

Those proclaiming "They have always been the leader in the fight and no one has really shown me anything yet that has convinced me otherwise" willfully ignore the facts of the matter.
Those facts have been posted time after time on this forum.

Fortunately, opinions are like sphincters; everybody's is a little different.
If you can't afford a DIME A DAY to do something (ANYTHING) to help keep guns in the hands of their owners; do as all the NRA haters say they are doing-namely NOTHING.
If you don't trust the NRA to do anything for your guns, then feel free to denigrate them, dredge up pre-history to make your point, and catcall those that try to point out that all that happened EIGHTY years ago.
BTW, I like the magazines too!

Some think that they do nothing. Others think they do a lot of good.

Facts, however, are facts. The fact is that there is no other pro-gun organization, including Gun Owners of America, that have the clout that the NRA does and the ability to truly get things done in Washington.

The fact is that in order to get things done in Washington, one must make comprises. To sit back smugly and say, "I hate that organization, they compromise," is silly. If there was no compromising, there'd be nothing positive done, which is a far worse situation. I don't like the compromises myself, but I'm at least mature enough to understand reality.

You can sit there all day long and say that the Second Amendment says so, but while our lawmakers are whittling away at the Second and those laws are being enforced, they aren't going as far as they could because of the NRA.

FWIW, I'd happily give up my magazines if they'd take the $20 they cost and apply it to promoting legislation, instead of spending gobs of money asking for more money. But, that's just me.

The NRA ain't perfect, but it is the only group that is capable of being effective.

If you think the NRA is doing enough for the preservation of the 2nd and not just for hunter rights, that they have Repealed just one of the 25,000 gun laws, and think the compromises they have been party to and dont mind that the NRA itself has gone along with more restrictive legislation, then by all means give them your money..

With you permission, Classic, I have. I just renewed my two granddaughters annual memberships ahead of schedule. I decided to not wait until Christmas....I'll give them memberships to GAO for stocking stuffers this year. [:)][:)]

They are THE national organization that supports and fights for our gun rights. I do not agree with everything that they do, but I recognize that we, as gun owners, need to be members. There is power in numbers in our system. Please join.

One compromises on the color of the drapes.

One does NOT compromise away basic Rights..then proclaim themselves "Second Amendment Supporters".

The hard truth being..every man that does so is spitting in the face and on the graves of truly BRAVE men...the Founders.

Compromise away, boys..just recognize the truth of the matter.

I became a life member of the NRA back in the 50s,and am a NRA certified instructor and Range safety officer only because our club wants it that way. Over the years I do not like what the organization has become. Unfortunatly I cannot resign a life membership but I damn sure made it clear that I dont want to be dunned , sent literature, or ask for contributions to their vacation funds..

If people would get together instead of relying on some money grubbing politicians, and yes they are politicians, much more could get accomplished instead of complaining and letting someone else do the work, which the NRA isnt doing as they like to spout off..80 million voices funneled through one mouth is nothing but a squeak..

I made my decision to join. The reason is this....NO, the NRA isnt perfect but I feel that by joining the group I will have more influence over them than by not joining. I dont see a potent alternative to the NRA that I can join. Maybe however I might join multiple groups.
The bottom line is I feel I can do more for gun rights by joining and having a voice than by not joining and having just a complaint on the internet.
For those who dont like the NRA I believe the best thing to do would be to join and try to change it from within as a member.

I wouldn't join the NRA if the membership was free

In my case, its not about "compromise", its about the NRA's deliberate acts of political sabotage against folks to truly are "Pro Gun"

I already posted about the letter I received from them. (NRA). My membership expired June '07 and in July, '07 received a letter from them, "it's people like you who will cause our guns to be taken from us." I returned the letter with the comment, this letter is an insult.

Now in hindsight, maybe I shoudn't have been so thin skinned to react that way. However; an organization that will send a letter guaranteed to alienate members can't have that much smarts. I'll probably rejoin when they ask me. Like a few of you have said, "they're better than nothing."

I'm not thrilled with the NRA either, been a member for a long time... Don't like paying for their fancy hq building and suits, but... BUT there are alot of politicians out there that RAIL against the NRA so I GOTS to think they're making someone uncomfortable somewhere. If they weren't making a difference at ALL you'd never hear the anti-gunner's pithin' and moanin' about them, right??? I'll keep paying 'em, one year at a time...

Actually, were I trying to deprive a free people of the means to defend themselves and their country, I would move to put people in place in any organization that opposes me.

Thereafter, I would be sure to have those people put up a really stout defense..till it was time to sit down in a back room and 'compromise' away a bit more freedom...
Meanwhile, I as master would be gauging the resistance movement nation wide...by watching the amount of objections that flowed into that organization.
Carefully crafting new laws to stop just short of causing open rebellion..gauged by feedback from that organization..I would advance the cause of tyranny step by sleazy step....

I would also cause my lackeys to cry out with great distress about the 'awful power of the gun lobby"...as we now labor under 20 odd
thousand gun laws. What a laugh.."Gun lobby power"...

I think you're forgetting about how within 22 years of announcing they were starting to fight for CCW reform nationwide; the NRA and its' members have gotten how many states to allow it? Isn't it like already 24 or so? That speaks volumes about an organization that can lobby effectively through even the Klinton/Brady laws and 3 Administrations.
My source for the date of the effort is the Sept. 1985 issue of the American Rifleman. It's on the cover.

Forgive me, Master. Now, get over yourself.

I'm actually interested to hear your Kool-Ade opinion. Do you think you can come off your high horse for a minute and lay your position out in something other than a slogan?
