new additions to the family....

last november, we found a couple of praying manti on the porch, 2 female 1 male... one female (charlene) made an egg sack. her babies hatched 2 days ago. 3 of them we know of. we call one maurice. here's some picks of maurice climbing on my arm. kinda fuzzy but you can see him.

    Poor Maurice. Does he know the mating ritual? During the act of mating, the female snatches the male's head off and eats it. Seems that is the only way the act can be completed.

    So cute.....we are just coming out of the "fuzzy worm" festival around here. Caterpillars are everywhere....little black fuzzy inching eating boogers! You catch an occational microscopic green one from time to time....they have no fuzz but the show they put on with the strange "inching" makes up for it.

    they are so small and almost see thru. maurice seems to be comfortable with us and likes to climb all over. he even answers to his name. weird.

    so much as they're not wooly worms, locust, i'm ok with them. i remember stepping on one as a kid...stung my foot and the swelling hurt like blazes....

    a wooly worm is a worm about 1"-2" long and very fuzzy. the fuzz is dark brown almost black and an orange stripe around the middle. their defense mechanism is to sting with little barbs that are mixed in to their fuzzy backs. the sting is a mild irritant leading to itching, swelling, mild pain, headaches, nausea, gangrene, drought, pestilence, plague, and earthquakes. well, at least the first three are true.
