parts and ideas
ok guys, how conceivable is it for one to buy all the parts separately and assemble them into the desired gun? i'm thinking of a sig, walther, or 1911. and how expensive do you think it would be to try?

Parting together a gun is fun. Unless it's in a kit, the price of parts would exceed the cost of just buying the firearm 0 -
For most guns that you will need to buy new parts you will not really save much money unless you want to put special aftermarket parts in it. Now if you were planing on builing guns from parts kits like 1919, AK, M2, ect you will save lots of money. If you are trying to get around some sort of paperwork you will still have to fill out a Form 4473 for the reciver unless you built that at home. 0 -
but for someone like me (limited funding, budget so tight you could bounce a quarter off its azz) buying the parts separately as i can afford them is a possible route then?
i love sigs, walthers and 1911s, but for thier prices i could pay my mortgage payment or at least a large portion of it.0 -
1911's are doable. sarco carries 1911 parts kits that are supposed to be good. I'm currently building a national match 1911. I'll keep the board posted on how it goes. 0 -
I have built several 1911's,its an easy build but you do need to take your time,all parts are not drop in as claimed but they are close and easy to fit, you need to fit your barrel and fit your slide to your frame.I like essex stainless frames and you can buy most everything else you need on fleebay a little at the time as money allows.if you do try this let us know as it goes along and I will help you on some of the small parts,I have alot of them collected over the years,GI style triggers and hammers and such.. 0 -

i did a web search for gun parts. out of 50 sites i checked on, only one carried frames. price was just under $300. is that good? 0 -
aramisvi, the receiver is considered to be the gun. You won't be able to mail-order that like you would a barrel or spring. Most places you can get most of the parts without jumping through the hoops, but the receiver will require the hoops unless you find one for a "private" sale where private sales are legal. 0 -
receiver = frame right? ok. i have no problems with paperwork, hoops, or traffic cones (but i hate orange barrels). i am just looking for suppliers that carry the parts at a decent price. i'll do the paperwork as is necessary at the time. i'm not looking to "backdoor" or go under the radar, no black ops sneaky-sneaky stuff. just trying to find manufacturers or suppliers that carry quality parts for decent, not sell your mothers soul, prices. 0 -
to be honest, the receiver/frame will probably be the last thing i get as it is also the most expensive part. as for the other parts, they seem to be rather inexpensive and i could get multiples of some parts in case i break or lose them. once i get a good schematic with accurate listing of all the parts and an "idiots guide to building a 1911" then i'll start with the parts. any suggestions on those? 0 -
Assembling the front sight and the safety/slidestop detent housing on the 1911 isn't easy to do a neat job. 0 -

easy things are overwhelming us. i'd like to have the satisfaction of saying, " i built this and it works to specs." if it is too complicated i hope that i can ask you guys for some insite as to how you solved the problem before i pitch it into a lake[:)]0 -
I've always had pretty good luck with NUMRICH Gun Parts, but I have heard some complaints about them. Even the people who got wrong parts or bad parts said NUMRICH was good about sending the right stuff on the second try. I think NUMRICH has a lot of exploded drawings too. 0 -

what caliber should i go for, .45, 9mm, .40, spitwad?
standard is a .45 right?0 -
I prefer the .45 but that's just a personal preference. If you have a chance, shoot one of each and see which one you like best. Contrary to what most of us will tell you (including me) there ain't no "best" pistol. 0 -
Just keep in mind that if you buy all the parts and build one yourself you will have about 3 times the price of buying one and when you get it all built you will have a 1911 worth 1/4 of the one you could have bought. 0 -
jamesrk: i'm partial to 9mm. so i want to make sure i get the right parts to build it in 9mm. but if .45 was its original design, i'd like to go with that. i am a traditionalist after all.

point taken. but the inherent value of a gun bought from a manufacturer, dealer or privae owner isn't a big concern at this point. of course that will probably change as i go along. most of the things i have built i still have (model cars and the like). except for the 305 i rebuilt 3 years ago. i was going to drop it into a 78 camero but i needed the money so i had to sell it. sold the car for $300, the engine for $900. pretty thing too, but hey...on to something i have never tried...building a gun.0 -

they carry a very good line direct from the factory,you will have to get your ffl to order for you,frame shipping and all is around $200,spend the extra couple bucks and get a stainless enhanced model you will be glad you did,blue GI slides can be bought for around $110 and if you buy both new from Essex they will lap and fit the slide to frame for you at no charge,,""i like a blue slide on a stainless frame"",small parts can be bought almost anywhere,I have built several nice shooters "not collecters" for the price of a bottom name 1911 and I know what kind of quality they are made of,,,,plus its FUN0 -
I built a 1911 from parts and only had about $450.00 in it when i was done. I was patient and waited for a sale or a good deal on every single part.(alot of them came from CDNNsports.com) I use this gun every week in a competition shoot with no problems once i tweaked it into good shape. Shoots as well as my buddies $3000.00 competition gun too! Just be slow and patient when fitting the parts and take an armorer's course on that particular weapon. You will probably value that gun more than any other in your collection because it becomes a piece of you by the time your done building it. Good luck and have fun! 0 -
