Water proofer over stain ?

    it'll work just fine. i built my aunt and uncle a 20x30 deck a 10 years ago. white pine stained rosewood, treated with Thompsons...they just retreated with Thompsons 2 years ago...still looks good.

    I mix the stain 2:1 with water sealer,...they both penetrate simultaneously. Works like a charm,..if it appears to thicken a little, thin with mineral spirits. Learned this when living in a Cedar sided house on the water with heavy wind and sun.

    ..Too late to mix the stain and sealer. We've been using Thompson's or the generic Menards brand on the decks for years, but they are just raw wood, not stained. Thompson's is good stuff, I just didn't know how it would work over latex. Given that latex stain leaves the wood almost as porous as raw wood, I guess it should be fine.

    tap, some stains also have a poly coat mixed into them, avoid these. they suck.
