I think there is more than enough black history taught in schools. Do we get mad if they dont have enough white history? 0 -

Been that way since the mid 60's when Welfare made the Black Male irrelevant to his family. Three generations later we can see what happens when the Gub'Ment messes in folks lives by handing out money.0 -

I was talking with a co-worker of mine in a past job one time. He was talking about black history and I asked him why complain about it since there isn't even a white history month. His reply was that every other month is white history month. /sigh

Compared to most other etnic groups there is very little recorded black history. Before any significant exposure to other racial groups they existed in basic stone age tribal units. No alphabet of any kind, thus all history was word of mouth, passed down through time, and almost all of that has been lost. Other races began recording black history before they did, meaning most written black history is @ 500or so years old at the oldest. I'll give them one month a year for "history", it can all be easily covered in that time. I do find it odd that most of the focus of black history month is on the bad things that have happened to them, seems kind of a negative thing to highlight. 0 -

The only black history that I've seen focused on is recent stuff that should be included into our regular history lessons. I see this as another BET, Negro college fund, ect but if you had any of this for white people that would be considered a racist group by most people.
How does that make sense in our country thats struggling for "equal" rights? This issue really annoys me for some reason.0 -

Then you're saying that what they're gripeing about is the fact that the majority hasn't recorded their history for them. By the same token who was recording Anglo Saxon history for the Anglos? I disagree that the focus is on the bad things that have happened to them. The focus is on the bad things that the ancestors of the majority did to them and without acknowledgement of the simple fact that the original slave traders were their own brothers in Africa.
I say give them their reparations. I want a precedent to claim my own after paying taxes for many years to support a particular minority. After all, who is enslaved now?0 -

Blckhrn, I didn't infer that they're griping about the majority not recording their history. Having no way to record their history, none of it was saved until they had significant exposure to races that had the technology to compose ,write, and store information. That didn't occur until relatively recently, and the bits of black African history that was recorded is coincidental at best because the focus was on the history of the European colonists in Africa. Of course the history of blacks in America is thoroughly documented by whites since the first days of slavery, and at least from the early days of emancipation the blacks have been building a history of their own. I agree, they do need to acknowledge that their own kind took no small part in the capture, ownership, and sale of slaves in that era. Let them have their history month, as they say, white history month is every month. Look around, most of what you see is the result of "white history". 0 -
How about teaching a little native-American history, how many of todays students know about WW2's code talkers or how about teaching Asian-American history where a unit in Italy was one of the most decorated combat units in Europe after their parents were placed in camps after their homes were confiscated. All of these "minorities" have had great leaders and have shaped our nation, but where is their "national holiday"? Instead we close down the government, banks, etc. for Mr. King, who very much favored the communist doctorine, had multiple affairs, had some shady business dealings, the list goes on. True, Martin Luther King brought justice to the black people, but lets be fair to everyone. Many minoritys have contributed, but only a few have their day in history recgonised. 0 -

Cornflk1, Pre Columbian history of Native Americans suffers from the same problems as pre white Africa, inability to record it. The Post Columbian history of Native Americans is well documented by the European conquerers, settlers, and their descendants. Native Americans, as have Afro Americans, have recorded their history now for over 100 years. Native American history, including the famous Code Talkers, is taught in schools and most intelligent people are fairly aware of Native American history. Same for Japanese and other Asian Americans. These ethnic groups, however, do not dwell on past injustices, rather, they have worked hard and progressed quite admirably and have become honorable, productive parts of the American community. 0 -

Well said, and then adding an entire month of celebration makes it laughable, to say the least.
The fact is that the entire civil rights movement is racist to the core...plain and simple, despite any good that comes from it. And, why not? Their racist NAACP chairman Julian Bond is their idol, and he displays the Nazi and American flag side by side. Now who needs to be persuaded otherwise?0 -

I could have been more clear about my remark, Dak. I meant that both slavery and a month long celebration each and every year is wrong, in my estimation. And, agreeing to it does not make it right. 0 -
