When I was a lad of about ten years of age, My Dad told me about RIP. RIP was a bonifide Texas Horn Toad who had the misfortune of being imprisoned, I would think, at a rather young age. This, back in 1897 Texas. Eastland, Texas, specifically.
The story went along the lines of what's published about RIP today. In 1897, several thousand people showed up in this community and gathered to celebrate the completion of their new courthouse. A conerstone of this building had a compartment cut in its marble top, where folks placed several items, to include, RIP the Texas Horn Toad. Folks forgot about their time capusle that contained RIP. Some thirty-one years later, folks of Eastland decided to build another court house where the old one stood, and it was not long before some folks recalled Old Rip.
The day soon came to remove the cornerstone that served as the community's time capsule, and as the crowd gathered, a man reached down and picked up Old Rip. His lifeless form being witnessed as he was held up high by the tail for all to see. About this time one of RIP's hind legs began to twitch, and then the other. Suddenly it was apparent that Old RIP had survied thirty-one years in his manmade tomb.
It's said today that the only way RIP could have managed to live was to have eaten the ants and insects that made its way into the hollowed out top of the marble where he lived all those years. Folks think that RIP got his water through the moisture that would accumulate from rain or dew in his prison cell.
At last RIP died, about one year later. Today the citizens of Eastland, Texas have Old RIP's embalmed body enshrined in a glass covered, velvet lined, horned toad vault where Old RIP is on display in the lobby of their court house.
