oldest has scoliosis (spelling?) doctors AGAIN!
My 15 yr old never sits up.....slouches and it was hard to notice until now. She has been complaining about her right shoulder hurting and when she pointed out how her shoulder is "crooked" it worried me. We went to the pediatrician.....which was hillarious being surrounded by babies and toddlers waiting to be called back and then walking in with my daughter (who is taller than me now.)
It has been confirmed by them and the specialist they had sent us to three days later.....scoliosis. Scary for mom and I think she is a bit nervous about it also. They are sending us to physical therapy and if they can't get things "on the right track" they will do an MRI. I don't understand the idea of physical therapy.....her spine is crooked....its a little past excersize isn't it? I don't know a thing about this though. I would imagine someone could make a FORTUNE off of physical therapy tapes or DVDs to do from home. I really don't look foreward to driving to these appointments!

Locust....my cousin Jill is a physical therapist. the exercises they will put her through will help to stretch her muscles and realign her spine. it will hurt too. i'm not going to lie to you. but what they have to do is break the muscle memory of the way she currently has them trained and retrain them to correct the condition. DO NOT go to a chiropractor...it will do nothing to help her. Once the muscle memory is broken she'll stand straighter and more balanced, plus it'll help reset her legs. look at her stand sometime, you should notice that her feet are turned out slightly. that is to recenter her center of gravity. the exercises she'll learn will help that too. 0 -
Physical Therapist and dental hygienists are sadists!
Good luck!
...Great. Now she needs a vehicle to do to those dang physical therapy sessions. ...just trying to find some humor out of it.0 -
true, but Jill's good at it.
she'll probably smack me if she knew i said that.0 -
I really feel bad knowing all of that aramisvi.... She is a missymess....drives me crazy 99% of the time but she has been through enough with her knee over the past year or so. After the go-cart wreck and surgery we are finally "back to normal" from dealing with all of that.
I understand now why physical therapy. I think I will try to explain to her ahead of time how if she REALLY pushes and gives it her best without whimping out it may lead to it being over quicker. We had to do physical therapy with her knee.....and the exersizes they asked her to do at home NEVER got done. I'm hoping we will see better out of her this time if they give her anything to do at home again.0 -
LF,
To get her to do her exercises, just show her the neck/head/back braces they have at the doctors. Then just tell her (or have the doc tell her!!) that she'll end up wearing that equipment if she doesn't do her exercises.
Good Luck,

yeah, and if she has to wear a brace, you can decorate it with fridge magnets.
too bad you live so far away, i could get you set up with Jill.0 -

see...zipper knows.
zip...what are you??? you seem to know everything. should we call you funk or wagnell????0 -
Nope - I have always kept my eyes wide open and have never been afraid to
ask questions, kept good company and thought good thoughts.
... my Ex is a Super-Nurse RN who I still enjoy as a very good friend.
Medically, what she doesn't know, she can find someone who does here
in the medical field, in San Diego, or Los Angeles. Gretch is highly regarded
by all who know her and her resources seem endless.
I'm a good research person.
... I enjoy helping those who need it.

same here zip. if I don't know the answer, I find someone who does. one of the reasons I had such a high customer base at the autoparts store. people remember that. 0 -
you don't have a list like Earl do you?
do good deeds and good deeds will be visited upon you.
good basic philosophy. i try to do the same no matter who they are. dignity goes a long way with even the most troublesome person.0 -
so you are becoming more like bamboo than being oak. 0 -
I learned that a long time ago.
I was that same stubborn, rigid kind of person, thought I had set my path and nothing was gonna keep me from it. Then someone put a fork in the road. then another. I had to choose "stay to the right" or make a daring "left" and see what happens. each decision made me realize that I had to adapt and bend with each change. I still learn from each choice. and while i regret some actions, i don't regret the choices. besides, being bendy makes bedrrom antics more fun[:p]0 -
sure zip...anytime.
