I do it all the time. You get the cool air of the AC and the air flow of the windows open.

dad use to do it all the time.
he said, "im paying for it, i can do what i want."[:)]

but, im told to make sure you set the a/c to 'fresh' instead of recirculate.....it will draw fresh air into the system instead of drawing recirculated.
im told drawing on recirculated helps the system keep air cooler with less work. but with windows open, it wont be. 'fresh' setting makes it work harder to cool the 'new' air.

If you have a healthy engine and ac system in your car , it's not costing you anything. I don't see any mileage difference with my 06 Taurus with the ac on or off.

I was just wondering about that yesterday! I do.

I also have the windows down and the heater on in the winter.

I do it, but only with the driverside window down - I do the same with the heat in the winter. I like the fresh air.

Not down here in Sth. LA. It'll frost your system. A/c can't pull the moisture out of the air so it blows frost.

I put the top down on my mustang convertable, no a/c. cost too much in gas to do that.

What is wasteful? If the A/C is on, I am pretty sure the A/C compressor runs continuously until the A/C is turned off. The temp being regulated by the outside air blending unit. At least this is the way it used to be. So a car with A/C only on should use the same amount of A/C and gas as one with the A/C and windows down.

And as catpealer said - the car should be able to handle the 1 HP that the compressor needs without too much noticeable fuel cost changes.

The A/C compressor also runs when you use the front defroster.

But all that good cold air, seems ashame to just throw it all away like that.

I don't touch my A/C much, except when the car has been sitting closed, I still drive with the windows open, then I shut it off. The wind cools the sweat in my hair, I'm good.

Who here drives with their A/C on and the windows down? I usually open all 4 windows and the sunroof and put the A/C on high/recirculate (higher blower speed). If anyone is in the car with me they seem to automatically want to roll up the windows when the A/C goes on. I tell them not to worry about it. They they look at me like I'm some sort of psychopath.

You get the fresh air but not the 102 degree temps.

I do that, I also drive with the emergency brake, windshield wipers, emergency flashers, and headlights on. I also like to continually honk my horn. With the price of gas as high as it is, I like to get the most out of my vehicle that I can.

AC on with windows open = overworked AC that will eventually freeze up and will have to be shut off and thawed out before it will throw cold air again. Seen it happen many times in the heavy equipment I operated when working. Foreman would come in and leave the door half open, before long blowin warmish air. There would be frost on the circulating pipes. Turn off until frost melted and it would be good to go again.

Saturns are notorious for that, my saturn's AC is ice cold. I found out after reading online a lot of people thought their AC compressor went, turned out it was frozen.

I don't understand this 'fresh air' concept - what you're breathing inside is exactly the same as the air outside.
