    dont discount it until you shoot it,I have one I have owned for several years,bought it at a yard sale,,out to 50yrds its a tack driver,many a young boy in this part of the world learned to shoot with it,,refinish that wood and he will have a fine rifle

    I do prefer to give kids "bolt action" 22 rifles to start with, rather than semi-autos.

    +1 on the bolt action for a first gun, but the OP didn't say this would be the nephew's first.
