Can you sleep when it's perfectly quiet?
I can't. I've always had a fan running summer/fall/winter/spring---7 nights a week since I was 6 years old. If that fan stops, I wake up immediately. Raised 2 sons with fans running when they slept and they still use fans today.

I always have a fan running. I hear ever sound if it isn't and can't sleep for anything. I have my "travel" fan as well. Camping is a different story never seem to have a problem there. 0 -
I can pretty much sleep through anything, or when its perfectly quite. 0 -
I like it quite. I use ear plugs in the day time, if I'm going to take a nap. The hummingbirds can keep me awake when they fly by the window if I don't. 0 -
I have to have quiet . . . although bird and insect sounds (other than skeeters in the ear!) are acceptable. Otherwise need white noise, utter exhaustion or some sort of chemical assistance. 0 -

I have a lot of practice in drowning out voices. Been doing it with my parents, siblings and teachers for years. The ones in my head are no different.0 -

45 years old and the tinnitus is bad. I did it to myself and the Dr. says it'll be there from now on. At times it is so bad I have to turn on "white noise" to drown it out. Yes, I have to have a fan. I also have a dream machine (crickets, frogs, rain, birds and so forth). Sometimes I have the attic fan, the ceiling fan, the radio, the floor fan in the hall and the dream machine running and don't even realize it. It drives my wife crazy. The constant high pitched tone is what drives me crazy. I go in the den and I can't hear the tv. Everybody just hands me the remote when I come in so I can turn the volume up. 0 -
..It'd dead quiet here. No traffic, planes or neighbor noise. The one thing that I can't stand is a barking dog. Mine never barks unless the yotes are really close to the yard.
..A note about tinnitus: You might try ginkgo biloba caps. I'm not too sold on the "mental focus" aspect of the stuff, but it really does help to keep that high pitched buzzing under control. It also helps if you get those excruciating leg cramps at night.0 -
i've never been in a place that's been perfectly quiet.
grew up in the mountains so something was always making noise, bugs...animals...etc.
now i live in the city (columbus ohio) and my house is less than a mile from the freeway. i hear the hum of wheels 24/7.0 -
With Tinnitus it is never quiet. So no problem. Wish we had known about hearing protection when I was a young shooter. Coulda saved my hearing. Of course those Poco/Steve Miller/Grateful Dead/Springsteen concerts took a toll too. 0 -

Same here. I can sleep in airplanes, cars, buses, movie theaters, standing up, libraries, just about anywhere. I just nod my head down and go to sleep. Loud / quiet doesn't matter to me.
I rented the 2nd and 3rd Lord of the Rings awhile back and was shock by how much I missed seeing it at the theaters. Must've passed out during both movies.0 -
My computer runs all night a foot from my feet. The cooling fans and hard drive are very soothing. Sometimes I forget to turn off the speakers though and hear a thunderingly loud sound from my AIM when someone signs on. [:D] 0 -

I too have had tinnitus for years. Likely a combination of concerts,
explosives when working in the mines, racing dirt bikes/sand dragsters,
shooting, etc. + it's a fairly common symptom of the ms.
When laying down at night the cricket sounds (year round) join in
with it, so that helps with the sleep some. If some other sound does
wake me through the night though, it's all over - may as well get up.0 -

After learning to sleep directly underneath the water brake for the #1 bow catapult on an aircraft carrier, I'm a sound sleeper, too.
Hmmm...
Three years on the Ike, a lifetime of wearing headphones plus shooting...
No wonder I have tinnitus.0 -
