Son joined the Army National Guard
He is 17, junior in high school, and will be going to boot camp this summer. This was HIS decision. I advised to go Air NG, but he went Army. Great Grandfather was a General (hundreds of combat missions in WW2) and Grandfather retired as a Chief MSgt in the Air Force and as a Captain in the Air NG.
Mike is a GOOD kid. He wants the NG to pay for college. I DID advise if his unit is called up, even if attending college, he would have to go. He understood.
Mike is #60 in this picture - he has been working out a LOT since this pic...about 40 pounds lighter and a LOT leaner/meaner.
Please, no negatives, just wish him well.

I wouldnt see why there would be a need to post "no negatives please."
Shouldnt be anything negative about anyone, especially if their serving.

Good for him although I would have advised on joining Air Natl. Guard also. I just hit my 20th year in the AirNG and it was the 2nd best decision I've ever made. 0 -

Congradulations to your son. Since he's in the guard and is going to college you should suggest that he take the ROTC program and when he graduates he will be promoted to 2nd Lt. If he's going to be in the NG he might just as well be the one giving the orders and recieving the higher pay.
My son did this and graduated in 2004. He was comissioned 2nd Lt. upon graduation and his unit was sent to Iraq. He came home a 1st Lt. Last July he was promoted to Captian and given command of the local Engineering Company.0 -

Whether he joined to pay for college or a new sports car doesn't really matter - he joined of his own free will and with full knowledge that he may be asked to put his life on the line in a foreign land.

The Guard is a great place to start; you can experience military life and decide if it's a good fit. I started out in the Guard and after 1 1/2 years went active.

Fine looking young man. Please tell him though to get ready for the most fun he'll ever have. I loved basic training, and I too started out in the Army National Guard and went on to Active Duty. I had 3 years guard and just about 10 years active, and I wished I could of retired from the military but my health just wasn't holding up. I really have alot of respect and admiration for these young folks who sign up to serve. I wish him the best!

The problem with becoming an Officer is that he will get moved around a lot. When I was in the Indiana A.N.G. it seemed like every 2 years we would get a new company CO (Capt.) and the platoon leaders (LT's) would move on also. My first LT went on to be our CO then on to something else. If he wants to get the rank then great, however he may have to drive quite a distance for weekend drills at times.
If he stays as an Enlisted then he should be able to stay in his unit that he first joined. He can move up in rank as a Enlisted just not making as much $.
One of the guys that was in the FDC of my mortar platoon when I started moved up to the Squad leader of the FDC and last I heard he was in charge of the Mess. How you go from tell the the gun crews where to drop 81's to make chow I don't know. He is smart and I imagine he is going great at his job.
I have found memories of my time in and at times have wished that I would have stayed in past my 6. March of next year I would have had my 20 in. At the time I got out I decided that I didn't want to stay for another 14 years. I knew that if I was to stay it would be harder to get out the closer to 20 that I got and if I started to really dislike it I would be miserable for the rest of my 20.
I would encourage any kids that I might have to join some branch of the Guard or Reserves. It is good money and a better experience.

He ate his first 6000 calorie MRE today - beef with gravy and mushrooms. He liked it! LOL!0 -
Congrats, I think they changed the regs that if you are in college you will not be called up until finished with college. 0 -
