not out of line, you are the king of your castle, i dont have children, and my wife doesnt shoot, and she knows that the two guns out of my safe are loaded for bear or crackheads, and she doent go near either, the 10mm semi is in a holster beside the bed, pointed down toward the floor the sxs 12 w/#4 turkey slayers is in the corner behind the door of the bedroom,if she cleans in there i unload both, and put them else where,my rules resemble yours,i feel you are on target[;)]

I've got a 3 year old boy and a 6 and a half year old girl. Both know I have guns, but both know there is no such thing as a play gun, and if play gunning ever starts, I'll put the squash on it quick. I've taken them both to large local shops and done the show-n-tell thing, trying to demystify them. The gun is just another one of daddy's tools, like a power saw or hammer or screwdriver. But, it can be dangerous, and don't play with 'em.

I'm off work next week. Gonna take the girl to the range with good hearing protection and show her what some guns can do - gallon jug with a slug or 308 at close range. Then hopefully she'll want to shoot a 22 rifle a few times, then we'll go for ice cream. :) My grandpa did that for me at her age, and it permamently put into me the fact that guns can be very dangerous and deserved respect.

I sometimes sleep with a shotgun in the corner with a shell ready to be racked.

no sir...not out of line at all.
if you friends or family have any problem with the fact that own any firearms, then they don't have to visit. it is their choice to come over to visit you. if because you do own they decide not to come and visit anymore, that is their decision. besides, you could always meet them out somewhere else anyway. may i suggest just giving them an address and say meet me here...the addy for yor favorite gun shop/shooting range, but don't tell them the name. if they meet you there, you may just have a chance to educate them.

Sound about right to me. Everyone that comes in my house knows that the guns by my bed are loaded. 1911 and 12 ga. The ones in the closet arent tho. I just got out of the habit of keeping all of them loaded.

Your rules are fine because it is your house. My rules are very much the same. Your sister-in-law is treating the situation from an emotional level. Nothing except a hammer can change her mind. Logic can not reason with emotion.

    I 100% agree.

I totaklly agree. I can grab a gun within 1o feet anywhere in my house, but you wouldn't know it. If someone don't like it, LEAVE[^]

    AMEN to those rules.
my kids are now 21 and 25, several people commented "guess youll get rid of those guns now!" WRONG!!
both youn'ens were exposed to them and handleing them by 5 yrs old.
and they KNEW BETTER than to touch them without permission and with dad in attendance.
in fact none were ever "locked" till they hit their teen years and i just didnt trust when "friends" were there that might get a moment alone near them

I have close to 30 guns in my home. About half of them are loaded at all times. My kids (ages 9 & 6) know that these guns are there. And they know they are loaded.

They will not even touch their own guns untill I tell them that it is time to go shooting or I give them permission otherwise.

And everyone I know also knows that if they come to my home that chances are good they will see a loaded gun here. If they don't like it don't come over!

I raised 4 boys with a house full of loaded guns ,never had one problem ,from the time they were potty trained I carried them to the range and to the woods hunting ,they knew what a gun could do and knew it was not a toy , I now have grandkids raised the same way by their parents and me , I do not have to rack one in the chamber it is already there ,I do not have to open the safe ,there is a fully loaded handgun on both sides of the bed in the night stands , its my house i paid the 15yrs worth of noted to own it and I will keep my guns anyway and anywhere I damn well please [;)]

Nope. Not bad rules at all. My dad takes me to ranges, I know all guns should be treated as they are loaded, dont point at anything you wouldnt want to shoot, dnot look down a barrel EVEN if you know its not loaded - might just be! When i was littler, I was not allowed to even THINK about looking at them until he got home, Ive been able to get my guns and look at them, clean them, shoot them, ect. now for a couple years. As a matter of fact, im gonna do alot of shopping, maybe i can get lucky and get some of those coins without the "in god we trust." on them, if i do, their 200 bucks at ebay. And i plan on buying a gun or 4. You just have to learn that guns are for hunting, they shouldnt be used for killing people, unless you need to. As youve said, guns are tools, just as if not more dangerous than a power saw. I can use all the tools also, that we have collected and bought, Took me a few times to learn how to hit the nail, got my thumb a few times, took it upon myself to learn how to drill, *note to self. Dont hold sharp part of screw while your screwing it into a board."

Youve got the same laws I had, and i didnt need the icecream to learn them, But thats always a good treat.

BTW: If you didnt already know, My dad is Lorne47 here at GunBroker

Yep. I know where 5 loaded guns are if I ever need them, You dont have time to say "Oh hold on Mr. Robber, let me load my gun so i can shoot you!"

I wouldn't want to leave a loaded gun where a casual visitor might perhaps pick it up and "test" the trigger. People do stupid things, and someone without familiarity might think it is cute to point a gun at someone and enact a scene from a movie, without considering whether it is loaded.

Take a guy professional masseuse who came over, with table, to do PT on the wife's shoulder. I had the kitchen table covered with guns, cleaning them all. I was explaining the nice feel of the Colt Double Eagle Commander, with a particularly good trigger. I said "check out the smooth trigger on this one", and he pulled the trigger without checking to see if it was loaded first. It was barely pointed in a safe direction first.

Now, I believe guns for protection should be loaded, with the safety off. But assuming someone will have the sense to assume they might be loaded is a big assumption.

Nope, not out of line at all.
I also keep 2 firearms loaded at all tyimes for unwanted guests.
    Winny 1300 Defender, Ruger P89DC.
It's also the wife and I, children grown and gone , grandchildren know that they don't touch any guns unless grandpa has handed them to them.

    I agree with #1 and #2, but not #3.

If you come to my home you might notice empty shell casings outside. Fair warning, the guns might be inside somewhere. You might even see a few boxes of shotgun shells inside. However my guns are out of sight. I know where they are but you won't. Be forewarned they are within reach. BTW the ones within reach are fully ready to function

I once got into a running argument with a rather obnoxious Liberal
business acquaintance and after telling him that I would shoot anyone
not supposed to be in my house (or any other time, for that matter)
he continually chided me that I wouldn't.

His tirade was ended, one day, when I tossed him a house key and told
him that all he had to do was let himself in and after the dogs drew our
attention to him to just shout out his name to me ... and we'd see.

... never heard another peep out of him!

... I also gave him a nonfunctioning key ... because if he was as stupid as
I figured he was, I'D have to clean up the mess! Everybody was happy and
    my carpet wasn't ruined.[:D]

I killed my sister-in-law this evening with kindness. Of course she started in on the gun issue, and I gave her a hug, kissed her on the cheek, and told her that I loved her. And I told her that I would use my gun to protect her life like any other of my family. She stood there with a deer in the headlights look about herself. I figured that that may have made it to her reasoning part of her brain. We shall see.

Glock 19 next to the bed.

Unwannted guests can expect 30 rounds in their general direction before I have to stop to reload.....if that doesn't do the trick I have a 15 rounder ready to go as well.....if that don't work, I'll throw it at them

    (1) Sounds good
    (2) Should be taken as a challenge to turn them into a gun lover. I will never ask anyone to leave because they don't like them. I just talk to them until they give in and become a gun lover also
    (3) No gun is to big for anyone in a self defense situation. The adrenaline will make you not feel anything.
