M1A stuff
After calling Springfield and getting more info I picked up the M1A I was asking about in my other post. It was made in July of 99 and is part of a "limited" run with this stock on it. It is basically the same thing as what a current loaded model is. I did post the "price check" on a couple other boards too. I did ok for this gun, if it had been a true NM it would have been a great deal. I am happy and that is what counts overall. I have got a couple great deals out of this dealer so it all comes out.
Here is the new one with the Gen 3 Mount removed.
I had a heck of a time getting a decent pic of this rifle. The stock is fairly light in color and is overall about what you see around the action. I would say it is very similar to my Ruger 77/22, just lighter in color.
Here is a pic of both of my M1A's. I just put on a proper FH with lug [:D] on my older one.
I got this one a couple of years ago for $1200 and it had a Springfield 6x scope, Gen 3 Mount and a Versa Pod on it. I just sold the scope and the other 2 parts are up on GB right now. When I was checking the specs on my new one I had the gal on the phone look up this one too. It was made in 1998 (dont have my notes for the month) and it has a NM bbl on it too. I had not noticed as you can hardly see the marking for it on the bbl but now that I know what I am looking for I saw it.
I am going to scope the new one which is why I am bringing my old one back to the basics.
Now I know there are several good mounts out there. What do you guys recommend and why. A buddy has a Smith and really likes it. I kinda like the looks of the ARMS mount. I know there are a couple other good mounts out there too.
I am going to put an IOR scope on this, but I am not sure what power. I have one IOR in 4-14x50 and one in 6-24x50. Both are good scopes and I am leaning toward the 4-14 it should be more then enough scope, but I keep thinking it is not. The other problem is the 6-24 only comes in a 35mm tube now, and the price is about $200 different. I have the 6-24 on a target rifle now that I have hardly shot. I have the 4-14 on my target AR and it is great. What are your thoughts?
Now for a bipod mount. I am looking at the rail that mounts on the forearm. What other good way is there to do this?

Is it just me or is the Length of Pull on the lower one's stock longer?0 -
if its not a NM, why the need for a scope? you can hit anything you want under 200 yds w/o one.[?] 0 -

May not be the best way, but on mine (since I have a few Harris bipods that I swap between rifles) on the forstock just above the sling mount I mounted a second removable sling mount and it fits just right.

Well I just went and looked. There is about 1/8-1/4" difference. I think it is that fact that one has the standard metal plate and the other uses the rubber butt pad.0 -

Looks like what I did to my 10/22! I had a big Tasco 6-24x Mil-dot on it. No purpose, the scope was just laying there so I said what the hell. It was good enough til I had the $$ to go buy a smaller scope![:D][:D]0 -
Safety on is good (ref earlier post). But the rifle has to be cocked in order to do so. I wouldn't put the rifle away with the hammer spring compressed (cocked).
Good de-cocking procedure (for storage-empty gun) pull the op-rod handle back slowly until you can feel the bolt touch the cocked hammer. Pull the trigger, and at the same time let the op-rod handle slide slowly forward. Voila! No dry fire! Works with M1's/M1 Carbines, and AR's that have the old style (smooth faced) hammers.
And remember, coyotes come out at night. Joe0 -

To be honest, the glass is so so. It does its job but it will be replaced with a Nightforce NXS. and new mount.0 -
I have one of IORs 4x24mm M1 168gr BDC on top of mine. It could probably use a little more but all I use the scope for is plinking or bustin' coyotes. For what it is It does one hell of a job!
NightForce aye! I have heard quite a bit of good about them but have yet to use or own one. Find it hard to get away from my Leopoulds and Barskas. I will end up with one one of these days though.

Mine has the same reticle with 200 to 800meter ranging dashes at the bottom. I like it! It looks kinda funny on there though.0 -

Other then quality the big reason I like the IOR is the reticle. I love the MP8, and my newer one is an MP8 dot which I like even more. They do not show it on their site yet but it is just like the MP8 but the cross hairs do not cross there is a little gap and then a dot in the center. The dot is not large like a mil dot, but is about the size of what the cross hair would be.

Lefty, those are mighty fine rifles you have there. Mine don't sport optics much cause I like to shoot these babies with out them, that's why I'm trying to get a few more.
MVP, if you don't mind me askin', where did you get that stock or is it a custom deal? It looks mighty fine and I really like the adjustable cheek piece.
