ever wonder about those truck "runaway ramps"
you see them usually in mountains or steep hills, this shows one getting used, i guess it is better than the alternative

That sure worked swell! I have never seen one bermed up like that, but did see one with a semi buried to the axels about 80 feet up the ramp. 0 -

our ramps here in the west are built a little differently, but about 30 years ago I remember a Halliburton pump truck get away east of Steamboat Springs Colo and it went clear to the end of the ramp and highcentered on the 10' high berm on the end, the driver jumped out and ran down the road for nearly a mile with a guy in a pickup beside him telling him it was alright. That was through probably close to 500' of deep pea gravel, I don't envy the ride of either driver, but would be good watching though. I have seen a few drunks try the ones on Teton pass, just outside of Jackson, usually ends up getting pulled out by a tow truck, but non of the pickup make it more than a couple truck lengths even at speed 0 -

I know what you are talking about. That truck east of Steamboat Springs was coming down out of Rabbit Ears Pass.
When I lived there, in 1976, it was once or twice a month a truck would take a dive coming down that steep road out of Rabbit Ears Pass.
Usually the driver was killed. The drivers were usually flatland guys out of Kansas or Nebraska who had trucks that were not up to the rigors of the Rocky Mountains.
In the fall of 1976 they were working on the runaway truck ramps but had not finished them yet.
There were stories of truckers who, when their brakes gave out, would climb out the window and ride on the running board, and steer through the window. When they got to a curve they couldn't make, they jumped, figured their chances were better outside the truck. There was the story of one trucker who was found clinging to the top of a 90 foot pine tree, unhurt. Supposedly that happened in 1974, I never could find out if that story was true or not.0 -

The ones here in Arizona are usually a long and steep incline over dirt, sand and then into a slew of impact attenuators that are plastic barrels filled with sand in increasingly larger amounts to absorb momentum. I would think that although there'd have to be damage, it wouldn't be a spectacular as that one. But, I never drove a big rig and I'm only guessing. 0 -
