kitchen knife & rust
I just bought a new kitchen knife and it works great for being only $5. However, it's got rust spots all over it now after only a few weeks! Is it because I put it in the dishwasher? Anything I can put on it to prevent the rust spots from reappearing?
TIA?

Use 00 steel wool, and veg. oil. Then STEEL it![;)] 0 -
The dishwasher could be the cause of it. We bought some cheap silverware a few times and after coming out of the dishwasher it rusted within a few weeks. We bought a little better silverware this last time and only a few pieces have rusted so far.

Many dishwasher soaps are incredibly caustic, and this gives rise to electrolytic "Cells" that start rust spots and unsanitary pits. Hand wash knives, and the rust is much less. 0 -
Funny thing is, it says "stainless steel" on the blade. [:(!] 0 -
"Stainless" has MANY grades - most will rust in dishwashers. Due to the aforementioned caustic dishwasher soap. 0 -
I never do my knives in the dishwasher![xx(] 0
