While I don't necessarily disagree with you in total, I have a distinct feeling that it may not be all that simple.
First, we need to agree that afterlife is a matter of faith, not fact. I pity those who refuse to believe. I believe because it's in my best interest. If there turns out to be nothing, then I'll never know. If there awaits what I think awaits, then it's in my interest to prepare.
Had I not experienced what I did, I'd totally agree with you. But what I experienced (whatever it was/is) was not evil. Many of us believe in a guardian spirit (Holy Spirit) or guardian angel. I'm not so sure that wings and a white robe are essential. Perhaps a denim shirt will work from time to time. Perhaps the veil that keeps us apart thins once in awhile.
What I'm getting at is the wisdom of the orient. Where there's good, there's evil. In other words the yin and the yang. If we believe in a heavenly spirit, then it must follow that there are likely evil spirits. I would propose that this is exactly why we are instructed not to attempt to commune with spirits as it carries a great risk. I might further propose that sometimes we get what we don't seek.
All I'm saying is that whatever we experienced did not follow us to our new home and exerted a protective and warm influence upon us while we resided in our old one. This was not the mark of evil and perhaps was merely our imagination, though I think otherwise.
I sometimes wonder if perhaps we migh retain free will even at death. Perhaps we somehow are unaware of our own passing, or for some reason feel that our business here on earth is unfinished... Or perhaps we're directed to spend some "extra" time here for a purpose. I don't know.
Whatever the true facts are, I took away a deeper faith from my experiences. It led me to being able to release my mother and father into death with the sorrow of missing them, but the faith to believe that there was joy in their passing. This is certainly not the result of evil.
No ECC, there are gentle hands there for you if you're willing to feel them. Please don't deny what you haven't experienced.
Ghosts? I wouldn't call whatever I experienced a ghost. Certainly not in the way we portray them in popular stories.
Evil? Not in my experience either. Evil is neither gentle, nor loving, nor warm.
But... What do I know?
Nord...I do believe that there are angles present too. The Bible says that some will entertain them, without know it.
I have delved into the spirtual world and done and seen things that defy explanation. I believe that there is a spiritual war going on around us all the time...but I do not believe human souls stay here with the living once they pass on.0 -
I posted this before on another thread. But the "Ghost" that my mind creates looks something like this!

The Bible states that there's a "chasm" between the living and the dead...and that the dead cannot return to the living.
... and? I haven't heard anything about the dead returning to the living.
OK ... here are a few examples of what I've mentioned. There are more but I'll not debate it on this thread - this is just an answer to a comment, or two.
In 1 Samuel 28:7-19, King Saul seeks a woman with a familiar spirit (demon) to inquire of Samuel about what to do. That she actually manages to communicate with the dead shocks her (v. 12) indicating to me that it did not previously happen.
In Matthew 17:1-8, Peter, James and John see Moses and Elijah with Jesus for a brief period of time.
In Luke 16:19-31 Jesus tells the story of the rich man and Lazarus. In this story we learn of there being two compartments for the dead until the Great White Throne Judgment (Revelation 20:11f.). Also in the story the rich man asks for Lazarus to be sent back to warn the living. Moses says it would do not good because if they will not believe God's written word, they will not believe though one should rise from the dead.
One interesting thing about Bible quotes is that there are more than enough to make a Hell and Brimstone statement ... and conversely, to refute them, all within the same book.

I was about 7 years old around 1981 and the family was watching tv around 8pm...Knightrider or Airwolf..something dorky....lights were off. I glanced from the couch in the living room towards the hallway and watched this white glove come around the wall so that I could see the glove...nothing else....it was so white in the darkness it seemed like it glowed. I was so frekin scared I could't speak...breath...then it disappeared. I was freaked out and thought I was just seeing things.
12 years later I heard the story about my dad coming home from Vietnam and was on leave from the Marines in a family picnic...his best friend in the world was his brother....on leave from the Air Force. They ate and went swimming....the AF brother cramped up and started drowning...my dad the Marine jumped in to save him but his brother was freaking out and trying to push him under. His brother died that day and was burried in his blues I bet....I don't know but I bet if I asked the family....he was in the Air Force Honor Guard....they wear gloves like I saw in 1981.
Divorce party 1999 in Guam..we were drinking up a storm and everyone either passed out or left...2 of us were still up at 2am and were bored....Let's go run down some deer. We took the 4x4 and were running the powerlines thru the jungle near the beach at 35mph when something told me to STOP! The powerline went straight down the cliff...maybe a 1000 foot drop off. We sat there for a few minutes and my buddy asked me how I knew to stop.....I told him....I don't know...something told me to. Never understood what happened until 2005. They found the remains of a pilot, tailgunner, and crew of a B-17 that crashed there in WWII and were never found. One of them saved my life.
2000 was stationed in California. My wife was about to give birth and I got a call that my grandfather passed away. I told my dad the wife can't fly and I have to be here with her....had to miss the funeral. After the baby was born and we went back to the house my wife had friends come over to visit while I was at work...her friends kids would scream and cry and refused to go into the babies room. Our dog would look into the room and growl and the hair on his neck would stand up. We'd be in the kitchen and the dog would freak out and started growling at a spot in the living room...staring at one spot. I walked to that spot and experienced cold....and the hair on my neck stood up. After a few days of this I said aloud...."Nice of you to visit grandpa but yer freakin everyone out....go on with your journey and well see you there". No more ghost in the house.
I ain't an aetheist anymore.0 -
There is not a shred of hard evidence to support the notion of ghosts. Eyewitness testimony is the least credable evidence there is and frankly we are all pretty gulible. Word. 0 -
Yep - never believe what you see or hear.
Uh huh.

My wife and I were in North Ireland in the early 90's and in a town called Ballygally. There was a castle there with a history of the ghost of a woman who roamed the castle at odd hours. We took a room there, saw nothing that night. The next morning my wife was talking with a lady in the lobby and told her I stayed awake part of the night expecting to see the lady ghost.
The woman said, "Ah yis, and he was a'hopin she was eighteen years old."0 -
I'm curiuos why you folks don't have bullet holes in your house. If I saw someone in my home that I didn't know I'd be a shootin son of a gun.
After my dad died I felt a wierd feeling once. I looked around for the source with gun in hand and didn't see anything. Then the feeling just went away. If I'd seen something, shots would of been fired. I'm chicken when it comes to ghosts or strange people in my house unexpected. I'll let you know if they bleed if I see one. [:D]0 -
My mother in law continued to live with us for a year after she died. My wife told me she could feel the presence one night. I said she was nuts. The very next morning I made coffee as always, put the grounds in the filter, water in the back and turned er on. After she finished I remover the solid stainless carafe and poured me a cup of hot water. I opened the filter compartment, it was dry as a bone. I emptied the carafe, refilled the cold water, kept my wooden stake in my hand and re ran. This time coffee!
OK physics experts, you'splane it, my wife was a witness,
I say it was Jennie Mae's ghost.
ps: our priest offered to do an exorcism. We refused, allways loved old Jennie Mae.0 -
I have never seen a ghost, but sometimes my dog talks to me.[:D] 0 -
Most of this can be explained quite easily. In the case of a loved-one, I believe it is the subconcious mind creating these images, because of the extreme anguish, and the "want" to see, or hear that person again. Same reason you dream about a lost family member, especially at first. The mind can manufacture some very realistic effects, if an individual is dwelling on something hard, and long enough.
As to the other situations involving "ghosts", i.e.,.......no relation to the person, or property,.........you've got me there! I think some want to see "ghosts", just like some want to see UFO's, and the same brain process takes effect. A normal situation causes something that is misinterpreted, because the person is wanting to believe the "paranormal" explanation, instead of the "organic".
Just my take, and I am certainly not calling anyone "crazy",.........I just have never seen a ghost, and the couple of times in my life that I thought I had seen a UFO, there was always a genuine scientific reason, for what I had seen,.....weather baloons reflecting light, a blown up NASA rocket one time, that burned off the fuel in the upper atmosphere, creating an expanding green "orb".
Maybe I am just "unlucky" when it comes to the paranormal![:D][8D]0 -

Never saw a ghost or lived in a haunted house. My parents house was my grandfarther's and my great grand father's house. It was built during the civil war. Nothing.
Mrs. Plaid had a stalker when we lived in Granite City. Sorry. Closest story I have. 68 year old woman. When I was first dating her, we were in the garage one night making out behind the Cavalier with the garage door open. A light blue Escort drives by and Mrs. Plaid starts running to the end of the driveway cussing and swearing. ????
Turns out this woman would call and hang up all the time. When we moved away to Monmouth it stopped. When we moved back a year and half later, it started up again.
I was greatly amused by this. If you have to have a stalker, why not a crazy old woman.0 -
I would go up to my girlfriend's house for the weekend. I knew she would be getting in from work at about 7 pm. I would be upstairs, watching tv. I would hear the front door open, and close, and hear high heeled shoes walking across the floor. Then the footsteps stopped, where she usually took her shoes off. I figured in a minute, she would be upstairs.
But, she didn't come upstairs.
About 45 minutes later, I would hear the front door open, and close, and in a minute she would come upstairs. I figured she had forgotten something at the drug store and gone back for it.
In a year, this happened about 6 times. I hadn't asked her about it, but it dawned on me that something was up.
A week later I was over there on a Friday night, heard the door open, heard the high heels cross the room. I grabbed the .38 and went right down stairs. There was nobody in the house, and the front door was closed and dead bolted as usual.
I asked her about it that evening, and she admitted that there was a ghost in the house, didn't want to mention it to me for fear it would run me off.
We would have lights turn on or off without explanation. Also there was a loud noise I heard late at night, sounded like someone had a cardboard box full of books and dropped it onto the kitchen floor.
The ghost would mess with someone who was new to the house, or who had not acknowledged that it was there.
My girlfriend told me that when she bought the house, there was a big RV parked in the driveway.
After she moved in, the neighbors told her that the owners of the house had lived in that RV for six months. Whenever a buyer was coming over with the realtor, they would go into the house and put a pot of coffee on, maybe run the dishwasher, to make it look like the house was inhabited.
Pretty weird, to not live in a 4 bedroom 3 bath house in the rich section of north Atlanta, rather to live in an RV in the driveway.0 -
We live in a house with a ghost, and I have seen him, once, shortly after Mike & I started dating.
I've posted this story too many times to count.
Mike was at work, my kids were with their dad. I was spring cleaning, washing the big window at the front of our living room, when I felt someone was behind me. I turned around and saw him, an elderly gentleman with a full grey beard and white hair, dressed in a grey suit, in fact, he was all grey. While my pea-brain was trying to process the amazing evidence I knew I was looking at, I turned away (Naw, couldn't be!). I turned around an instant later, and he was gone.
Mike came home that evening, and I told him what I saw. He said, "Sit down, baby," and proceeded to tell me the story.
The house was build by the son of a Civil War veteran, with the Pennsylvania Bucktail Regiment. Larson or Lawson, or something like that, was his name. POW. Old man came back from the war "not quite right," and the son cared for him in this house til his death.
I haven't seen the old man since that time, but every now and then, the dogs will act weird, stare up the steps, or into a corner, for no apparent reason, get low to the ground, their hackles up, doing that low nervous growling/barking-thing.0 -
This thread has been a great read, I've always wanted to have an experience similar to these to see how I handle it, or just to see what it is like. While I don't have a 'sighting' story, I do have a rather humorous story involving ghosts. We were hunting on a deer lease that had been full of oil wells back in the 30's if I remember correctly. At that time, the owner (George Buck) lived in the house that served as our ranch house. Opening weekend was coming around and we (my father and I) were getting prepared to head down, and our friend from Rockport was going to get there a day ahead of us and get everything set up. My dad had told him the story of how George Buck roams the house and the ranch, tending to his cattle, etc... My father never meant to scare our friend, just a joking little story we told to most of the people that came down. When we finally got down to the ranch, our friend (Dennis) looked awful, he clearly hadn't slept, little to no color to his face, etc... He swore he's heard the ghost of George Buck in the house last night moaning and making other strange noises. Turns out, after some 'detective' work, Dennis had deciced to settle down and watch a movie after he ate dinner. The VCR was crummy, and would lots of times start on its own, rewind on its own, etc... Anyway, the movie he planned to watch was one of, adult nature, and the moans and groans he had heard was no old man ghost, but I guess he had been too afraid to come out of the back room to notice what was going on with the tv[:p] 0 -
