I think it would be a great advantage to be multilingual. I have little neck for language, but I could easily use spanish daily. I have little use for the German THEY said was going to become the language of science (English became the language of science). I would love to be able to speak Spanish, Greek, Italian, Australian and other exotic languages. Useful in international business, getting a great job as a translator, and just being more well rounded (ok I am pretty well rounded as it is, but I am starting the diet tomorrow). Different languages show you different ways of looking at the world and different ways of expressing ideas.

The advantage would be to the child,,I think people in business that can speak more than one language would stand a much higher rate of success,, I was raised in Louisiana and could speak a little french,,it never helped me until I tried to learn spanish and they are similar enough that it helped,,as a sales rep I increased my business thus increased my income by 30k a year just by picking up another language,,,now if I could just learn to spell and type I could get rich

Well the next thing there will be religion rooms. Put your kids in the room with other kids around the world. Learn Buddapest, The Koran.. well endless possibilities. Maybe Bin Laden will show up and give a lecture.

It is not that your kid MUST learn it, it is that he has the oportunity. How can it possibly be an advantage to know less? How can it be better to live in a smaller world?

Knowing spanish won't make my son a better man.

It will make him better rounded and more employable. Perhaps less narrow minded too. You are correct, it will not make him more honest, more honorable or give him a spine. Perhaps there is more to being a man, though those things may be the most important.

During the course of my work, I have had to learn Japanese, Korean, German and Spanish. By the time that I had not used any of them for 4 or 5 years, they were gone. After I got sick, I lost my memory and that capped it off - I remember virtually nothing about any of those languages, even when I hear them spoken. I also don't remember any details of my work.

As time goes on, I seem to be recapturing some of my lost memories, but nothing of the languages.

The memories that do come back, are the ones I post here from time to time.

I know they are boring, especially to the younger among us, but when I put something ancient in writing, it tends to restore more.

There is no reason to learn spanish. It doesn not benefit me or my family in any way. Perhaps your missing the point. I am in the United States of America, we speak the english language over here. If I am going to have a conversation with someone it will be in english. And if not...well we just won't have one. We do not need the spanish language to excel in life in the united states. And there IS more to becoming a man. And learning the spanish language isn't one of them. Just because one has no desire to learn the spanish language, does not make them narrow minded.

You need to wake up in the real world,,even before the invasion there was a need to speak more than one language,,,now if you want your children to EXCEL they better be able to speak more than just english,,,,you can not even drive a truck cross country and not run into problems in places like south florida or the west coast being on a loading dock where no one speaks english,,I was in Arlington Tx,this week,,went into a Popeyes chicken,,,not one employee in the building spoke english,,Pick up the paper or go to Monster.com and see how many higher paying jobs you can go after if you speak both english and spanish,,,,,sticking your head in the sand will only put your children at a very big disadvantage

quote:If I am going to have a conversation with someone it will be in english. And if not...well we just won't have one.
In many cases that statement will also mean you will not have a job,,,or at very least not the higher paying job

When the world speaks English, there will be no need for other languages.

I'm in industrial sale's and I do just fine. Don't need no stinkin spanish here. When a spanish speaking customer call's or come's in. They need to speak english. And I also live in South Florida, and We do just fine. It's people like you that are so excepting of this and cater to them. That's what hurts our country. Your not part of the solution, you just part of the problem. Some things aren't ment to be changed. My son will have a good education without spanish. Only I will have to pay for it unlike some people. My son will excel just fine without it. Sounds like I need to grab the flag and head for the hills.

I was at the Yakima (little mexico of the North West) McDonalds the other day and I was the only english speaking white person in there. And it was packed, no tables left packed.
All the employees were hispanic and all the patrons were hispanic and being that I don't speak spanish I sure was glad Mcdonalds has a number menue. I could have got by with just holding up 3 fingers and got the right order[:D]

Let me say first and foremost I beleive to live in America you should be required to learn english as it's the language here.

What does learning different languages have anything to do with becoming a man? You logic is way off. If you cannot see the benifits to knowing multiple languages then you have some screws lose.

There are alot of business men that go to other countries to do business. Knowing that language gives them a big advantage.

My wifes family is from Mexico and I encourage my kids to learn spanish. Partly for the cultural value of where they came from and mostly due to it helping them with jobs as the grow older. Hell I wish my family still spoke German and would of taught me it, but it was lost due to WW2 and my family not wanting to be pin pointed.
