SIG-556 Range Report - Must start reloading again!
Finally! I got in a little range time!
Yesterday I took the 556 and the PS90 out for a little trigger time ... first time for the SIG and second for the PS90 ...
The good news is the SIG ran flawlessly with mags and Beta C and all the ammo I brought.
I was down to my last 30 rounds of 69grain Sierra hand-loads when I left for the range ... which is perfect for the 1-7 barrel on the 556. Not thinking I used at least 1/2 the mag getting the Aimpoint on paper Anyway its the same load I use in my AR's was shooting around an inch ... So its time to start re-loading again.
(I haven't loaded a single round since we moved nearly 3 years ago and my supply is now gone)
The bad news is except for my hand-loads, all the ammo I had; Wolf 62 grain and 55 grain Winchester white-box shot like crap ... It was just all over the place.
Although I'm very happy with the 556 I didn't even bring a target home.
As I've mentioned before, the 556 controls are very similar to the AR which made adapting to it easy ... but the trigger! Ahhh the trigger is so much smoother than any standard AR trigger I've ever had the pleasure to pull. The 556 is a 2-stage, after the take-up (which is also smooth) there is very little creep ... then it releases. It's nice
Recoil - there's not much to say ... I mean its a 223! If I could say anything it's a bit less noticeable / more controllable than from a 16" AR ... but then the SIG does weigh about 1.5 pounds more than my CAR-15 with carry handle (no optics's)

The PS90 ... a pleasure to shoot and really starting to grow on me. Great trigger for a bull-pup and extremely controllable. The only thing I forgot was some SS197 Hornady Ballistic Tip ammo I picked up at the last show ... which supposed to be more accurate than the SS195 40 grain HP's I was shooting. Off hand I was shooting 4-5 inch groups at 100 yards with the factory optic ... which is 2X the distance a PDW is intended for, but it was still fun and really helped build confidence in its ability.

I saw the 556 in an American Rifleman issue when I was in Kuwait, and I said, "That's the .223 for me."
Looks great with that Beta C double drum on it.0 -

Yep ... and I've had the AUG out since the last I've had the PS90 out too!
I'd kinda forgotten about upgrading the trigger in the AUG; the Trigger Tamer is why the AUG has the better trigger [:)] Plus the PS90 is so completely different from anything else it takes some getting used to ... the little bitty rounds (".22 maniac" as I like to call'em)
I'm getting better at mag changes and can do it 1 handed now, but not as smooth as with an AR or AUG ... and with a 50 round mag capacity I don't know why it wouldn't work for you in a 3-gun, since the mags are clear you can see your remaining rounds and as long as you changed mags before you went dry you'd be OK ... yeah, its growing on me!
I talked to my machinist buddy about making a shell plate for my Dillon so I can reload them progressively if I ever get to that point.0 -

Kimberkid, I'm glad you're having so much success with the accuracy of your Sig. Most people are averaging about 2.5 to 3" groups at 100 yards with good reloads. Factory rounds seem to be around a 7 or 8" group. I've tried the 69 grain sierra bullets and had one 5/8" group with 26 grains of Varget which is a pretty stout load. But I'm unable to duplicate or even come close to that success. What are you using for powder to consistantly get an inch group? Do you still have the gun? Did you find that your accuracy decreased with rounds fired? Hope to hear from you, Steve 0
