affordable coyote rifle
Good eveing all, well Spring is almost here and it is time again to start ridding the coyote vermin from our farm. I am looking for an afordable coyote rifle, hopefully a semi-auto. The only thing I have close to a coyote rifle is a single shot H&R .243 but am cautious about using it due for the need of a quick follow up shot. Would a 12ga. slug gun work? Any suggestions? If you get them under 150 yards a SKS should do just fine for under 200 bucks. You can put a scope on it if needed. If your shots are longer then a scoped AR type rifle in .223 would be hard to beat. 0 -
SKS, the rifle is affordable and ammo is still relatively cheap. 0 -
If you are calling them in then a 12ga. would work OK. I've had them come in as close as 20-30ft. before thet saw us, and have taken them with a 12ga. However, just seeing them out on the farm, I've never seen one closer than 100yds. most 200-300yds.
I'll third the SKS for a cheap auto. However my go to coyote gun is a cheap Stevens 200 .243 bolt. I've never needed a follow up shot faster than the bolt could give me.
In all my years coyote hunting, here, I've had one coyote run into a bullet when I tried a spray and pray while he was on the run. But like I said before, most all our coyote shots here are in the 200-300yrd range, some farther, so if you don't hit them standing still chances are you aint gonna hit them on the run at that distance.

I've whacked a bunch of coyotes in the 200 to 300 yard+ range with my Mini-14 w/fixed 4X scope. They drop fine with mil-surplus ammo.

Get a good used Savage bolt in .223 and chances are you won't need a second shot.[:)] 0 -
Get a Nikon scope for the HR. There is no such think as a follow up shot with coyotes. The .243 has a light grain bullet is you desired to save the pelt. Of course at this time of year, that is out of the question.

I picked up a Stevens/Savage Mod 200 in 243 about 2 months ago. A real fine shooter, Sub MOA all day long. Rifle was $259 brand new.
It's basically a Savage Mod 110(?) without the accutrigger and a cheaper stock. Still button rifled, still free floated bbl, still a fantastic deal.0 -

I dropped off a Mauser 98 barreled action chambered in .243 win at abcguns' shop a couple months ago. He's building me my untimate coyote rifle.
I used a VZ24 action and an A&B barrel from Midway and installed a low swing safety. Dennis is going to add Tinney trigger, stock, replaceable magazine and a few extras.0 -

And if you are close enough, and your a good shot. A wrist rocket with a 3/8" dia. ball bearing to the head works great with no messy clean up or noise, just a yelp.

It's a Barska 6.5-20x50. Infinitely adjustable Paralax, 1/8MOA, Shock/fog/water proof.
It was $80 marked down to 40 from Sportsmans guide. Included the rings, 3" Sunshade, and spring loaded covers.
This one makes my second Barska scope. Both are very bright, just as bright as my Nikon. I've been very happy with both.0 -

Put a 70-75 gr HP from your .243 anywhere through the chest cavity and you won't have to worry about follow-up shots. Over the past 30+ years, I've used a .243 for everything from barn rats (vaporizes 'em) to coyote to Wisconsin white-tail, and can't recall ever needing a second shot with proper bullet placement.
A good choise in milsurp might also be a 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser...accurate, reliable, and there's still a few around that can be had for a reasonable price.
