Starter Cartridges
What's cooler than firing off an 8 pound charge of gun powder to start a 20,000 Lbs thrust turbofan engine? How about Firing two cartridges off per plane, and 9 planes doing it simultaneously.

I remember seeing a guy start a tractor with a 10 ga. blank.Does that count 0 -
What kind of plane? 0 -
I believe that these are used on B-52's and KC-135s. 0 -
I remember the Jimmy Stewert movie FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX where they used large blank shells to start the engine of the plane.

it was common emergency restart equipment for a vast array of ww2 aircraft. i have one. it looks like a huge 4ga shotgun shell. the grains of powder look like salt rock and are packed loose in a clear plastic crimp.
if i was home, id take a pic of it. sorry, im not home!
btw....i saw someone shoot a jeep with a 10ga shotgun shell that 'wouldnt' start....does that count?[:p]0 -
18 TF-33s doing Cart starts.... what a mess!!! I hope you had a gas mask handy! 0 -
watch some old ww2 footage of birds being started on old aircraft carriers. guess what?[;)] see all that smoke and a plane captain standing on the cowling? its one of the reasons the words 'clear prop' was invented!
the gun that fires them looks like a gas hose nozzle...0 -
The winds were strong enough yesterday that we didn't need respirators. Normally, when we're using 2 cart on a plane, respirators aren't required. I'd like to see a BUFF start all eight off of carts. 0 -
COOL! One of the most dramatic scenes of the movie "Flight of the Phoenix" is when they are trying to start their escape plane and only have a couple starter cartridges. 0 -
I used to pull ALERT on G Model Buffs back in the early 70's. That smoke from all 6 planes would always follow me no matter where I stood. 0 -
We used them on F-4's as well, always a good show....[:D] 0 -
F-111's, F-4's lot of smoke 0 -
Y'all worked on some old birds, I'm jealous. Guess I shouldn't complain my plane's a 1961. Sometimes I wonder what life is like on the lawn dart side of crew chiefing. 0 -
Diesel motors on a liquid barge use an air motor as the starter. You pump and pump the handle to buildup air pressure before releasing the air to the starter motor. Batteries are not used. If it does not start, begin pumping again. 0 -
