any of your kids taken band

I was just told that all 6th graders were required to take. My wife is up at the school now and the cost of the insterments or out of this world.
I think if the school requires it then they should foot the bill.

    I dont mind paying the money for something she will use but after this year she wont be in it anymore she want to do cheer.

    Check around for used ones, You can use them too. We werent required. If we wanted to, more power. If we didnt, Good deal!

    Some music stores will rent them, too....
    Ditto on the "used".....if you can't find one locally, you might find one on the Net, buy it, and have it shipped for less than 4 semesters of rent....

    Our schools rent them to the kids for $5 a year, with a $50 refundable deposit.

    Craig's list and pawn shops are usually full of used instruments.

    See if she has any interest in drums/percussion. You should be able to find a good used snare drum for about $50. That's about all you'd need for orchestra or band.

    If you're worried about the racket at home when she has to practice...easy, get a practice pad that drops over the top of the drum head. They're made of rubber, and very quite!!! [:D]

    With any luck, it won't evolve into a love affair with drums like I did to my folks! [:0] I ended up with a nice big set of Ludwigs that drove the whole neighborhood crazy! [8D]

    My brothers choice of drums were Pearl.

    Ive got a King trumpet.

    I'm talking back in the late 60's when I had that set! Every kid on the block that was a drummer just had to have Ludwig cuz that's what the Beatles used. Rumor back then was Ludwig paid Ringo a few grand just to leave the name on the front of the kick drum.

    Pearl makes a good quality drum, no doubt. If I was to get real serious about playing again, and win the next lottery, I'd buy DW!

    My son started 3 years ago, also in the sixth grade. Some instrument company came to the school and rented instruments to the kids who needed them. It wasn't terribly expensive. The trumpets, flutes, saxaphones, etc were all about $20 per month. My son wanted to play the freaking TUBA ([:0]) and thankfully the school had a few of those. My best friend has his doctrate in music and teaches at one of the local colleges and he found him a nice baritone to practice on this past summer off e-bay. Cost about $120 with shipping. E-bay is one of the best places to find what you need, if you know what to look for and the good brands.

    +1 on the pawnshops- musical instruments get hocked all the time- picked up nice trumpet and nice flute for 10% of new cost when oldest kids were in band. Of course, with any wind instrument, clean it good! PS- oldest daughter is now 45, and still plays the flute she got in school. No wisecracks, now. Her husband is a 6'3" construction foreman!

    rent the instrument its 50 a yr from the school, or 50 a month from the music store here

    well I just got hit with the cost of 915.00 for a Trumpet Im going to check around to see if I can find any good used ones for half that.
    we were told to stray clear of ebay because of scames and that the loc. company only repairs name brade ones If it ever needed repairs
    all this sounds fishy to me [B)][:(!]

    I haven't talked to Tris in quite some time, so I'm not sure what this kit is worth, but I'm guessing 5 figures! [:0] The rack is 24ct gold plate, and the hardware is 18ct gold plate!
