you're just getting around to this fact? the whole idea of a labor union was conceived by commies.

in ussr everyone belonged to a union and if you refused to join "voluntarily" they'd harass you until you did. as far as i understand, in some unionized places here it's the same deal and if you don't join they'd run you out.

I would only join a union if someone forced me to and it wasn't possible to work in my chosen industry otherwise. Thankfully, I've never been put in that situation.

Unions had their time and place. Today, a union is nothing more than big business. They are not out for justice for the "little" guy, they are out for finding ways to collect dues and flex a little muscle every so often to "prove" they're relevant.

Dues are $36 a month and you HAVE to pay them for 1 year before they payroll deduction can be cancelled.

Sadly enough its true, unions have become big business. However all of you non union workers, that think unions suck, do away with unions, and see how what type of wage you make from the big business you work for. Like it or not, union wage sets the standard for all wage, as well as benifits. Of course, union bashers are blind to this.

i am not sure about that. i think the free market sets the wage and the benefits. i work in an industry with no unions and it's been doing pretty good for the last few decades without any union or government involvement. i am sure unions had a reason to exist a while back but again, looking at history of who, why and how they got organized i am pretty skeptical about justifications of their existence, i think, it's more like minimum wage (which i strongly oppose), but i don't have enough information to make an educated point on whether it's justified or not (it being both unions and minimum wage). again, while working the job i do for the last 15+ years i don't see any need for any kind of regulation anywhere at this place and age, imo, it only repressed wage/benefits growth and industry developments. well there's now also the problem with greedy bahstards hiring illegals for 1/3-1/2 the price of a local worker, but it's a fairly new problem.

in any case, the point i am trying to make is that self-regulated free market society would be a lot more balanced than union or government regulated one, at least here and now.

i am the single handed reason the afl-cio got voted out from a place i used to work, it began with me filing a grievance, i received a phone call from them, the rep asked me if i liked my job, i said yes, he said QUOTE: then shut the f up, it was game on then, i got the financial records of how much the union was paid by all of us workers, and what our benefits where from the amount of what we paid them, the owners father was our shop steward which is illegal, i made up flyer's for everyone, the rep came down on my day off, and made some bs threats against me to other employees, and once again ticked me off, our contract was up in three months and guess what, they got voted out unanimously

I've a suspicion your forum name speaks volumes.

I got my job on merit, kept it by working hard, advanced because they thought I was worth it and didn't depend on anyone else's protection to keep it for 27 years.

    Try it, fatboy.[:D]

Sorry, that's the brainwashing of the unions on you.

I was an insurance adjuster for 15 years. There wasn't any union representing insurance adjusters. The business was competitive and if carriers wanted the best they had to pay for it.

Simple economics. Nothing to do with unions.

I've been union for only 8 years, and I'll probably retire through the union. So if you don't like the union, go rat!

The minumum wage does more to set the wages of the union member. If the wage paid for an unskilled idiot goes up $2 then it becomes more economical to pay that "skilled" union member.

In essence, labor is an input, like other raw materials. If the labor is truly skilled at a higher price then it can be worth the pay. If the labor is only "organized", they are going ot have trouble competing in the labor market.

Whatever you anti union people got to tell yourself, keep it up. As I said, its sad but true, unions are now big business. I do hate that about them now. I've seen companies try to fire good hard working people, for no reason at all. I've seen unions keep the job of someone that wasn't worth a crap, and I don't like that, but thats a part of it. The unions are ran by the people. Which big business is the easiest to change, the one ran by the people, or the one ran by the coporate CEO's. To many people on both sides of the union issue, have no common sense. A great many union workers would find room to complain if the company offered them a job sampling pies for 30 bucks an hour, and as many coporate CEO apologist would gladly work 30 hours a day, 8 days a week for 3 bucks an hour, as long as no union was involved.

Well no disrespcet is intended, but if you don't like the union shop you work in, then get out of it, and get you a job someplace else. Even better, don't work for a scab temp services outfit. Temp services is one of the things wrong with country when it comes to someone trying to get a decent job, union, or not.

I was a Democrat - supported JFK (too young to vote) and didn't see
a problem back in those days. Today's a world apart of differences.[8D]

I was with the AFL-CIO electrical workers union and the Retail Clerks Union at one time.

Now I see most of the large companies moving their business offshore to Mexico or other places to avoid the pension and medical costs of the Unions. This is a slow and steady process and will break the remainder of the MFG unions in a few more years.

Another methoid being used is bankruptcy. Companies cannot get the Unions to accept the pay or benefit cuts so they file bankruptcy and get the courts to bust up the union benefits. The airlines have been doing this for years to stay alive.

Unions cannot compete with Mexico, China, India and other third world countries labor rates. With the free trade laws now in place that creates a catch 22 situation. Companies have to sell their products to compete with products produced in foreign countries with labor rates at a fraction of the US union rates. It don't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Union wage rates are going away.

It will take time but they are shrinking faster than the oil supply.

They have compensated for this by organizing government workers at all levels. Guess what, that causes the taxes to go up at a extremely fast rate to cover the Union benefits. As our jobs are all shipped overseas and south of the border and as more illegials come on board to work for zip wages there will be a skrinking tax base in the future and then we will have a big battle between the low wage workers and the Union Government workers demanding more tax dollars to pay their grossly inflated benefit packages.

The future of Unions and Government workers is a bit cloudy in this country. I suspect we will see strikes by government workers similar to what happens in the UK when they shut down the trains, buses and other transportation facilities. This is socialism at its best!

Money is shifting from the private sector to the government sector at a fast rate. This has happened all over Europe and brought socialism to most of Europe. We see it here in our current Congress and leaders poised to be elected to the White House. Not a pretty picture for our future freedom.

Claiming that unions are nothing but poison is like blaming corporations for all the nation's ills. There is an element of truth there, but the fact is both are indispensable aspects of a market that demands economies of scale.

Employers pay what they have too, and when employers in a certain industry had monopolistic power over the labor market there needs to be something to offset this.

Yet, look at how the US auto industry stuggles to pay all the expensive pensions and remain competitive.

Spanielsells quote: Unions had their time and place. Today, a union is nothing more than big business. This is the price we pay to have lots of affordable junk.

Whats wrong with that? Employers want their workers to produce the most at the lest possible cost.

Am currently a member of the IUE-CWA, chief steward at my shop. They are an affiliate of the AFL-CIO, and while I don't care for the AFL-CIO a whole lot, your a bit off on the mantra. It reads, we are entitled to an equitable share of the product of our labors. I know of a few lazy union workers, but they are very few. The company can get rid of the lazy ones. The company prefers however to keep them around, and employed, to use them as a means of divide and conquer.
