What is this M1 Garand worth?
I have been wanting a Garand to play with and have absolutly no experience with them. A friend is offering me this one. Springfield, Serial # 5,827,745. Barrel is clean and overall gun looks nice. Stock is a boyd. Whats it worth???

Different price for different folks, depends on who wants it and how "correct" it is to a collector. I went to our local gun shop awhile back and found an M1 in a similar serial # range with an aftermarket stock. Looked the rifle over real good and decided it should have a place in my collection. Went home to make the financial arrangements, and when I came back later that day, it was gone. The very next customer that came in after I left bought it, and it just happened to be Mr Boyd. He gave $1000 for it. I sometimes still kick myself for not just saying the heck with it and buying it, and I still get ribbed once in awhile about it, too.[xx(] 0 -

i have heard that the 5.8 are good shooters, what does the bbl read on TE and ME guages?
what it is worth depends largely on the "correctness" of the parts, (SA, HRA, WRA, IHC, etc...)
but i see no reason to pay more than what the cmp charges for any garand.0 -

Books are available, but I'd give 750 for that rifle right now. 5.8 mils are some of the best shooters as stated in an earlier post. I'd think you would do pretty good for 750. 0 -
If it has import marks on it, it's not worth over $450 in good condition, If it has import marks and non USGI parts (each part is marked) on it, it's not worth over $350 in good condition. Otherwise, $600 to $700 as a shooter in good condition.
Chech the muzzel and throat erosion before you buy it.0 -

If its a rebarrel, or arsonal rework its worth no more than 500.00 you can get them down here at McDill Airbase thru the CMP for under 500. All Original and never tampered with can go on up, Have seen then for 1200.00 at gunshows here.. 0 -

Cartod: givette here. First of all check the M/W and T/E. If OK, buy it!! Your bolt is "SA". Not "5A". Also the triggerguard is not period to your serNo. Should be stamped, not forged. (Minor detail). Best, Joe
EDIT: Also, after you buy it, go over to the auction side, and get two cans of Greek M2. It comes in bandoliers w/clips. You'll be all set. Joe0 -
a feb 55 bbl, on a 5.8 receiver, should be the original bbl, get ahold of some TE and ME guages to measure the wear, how does the bore look?
as for the other parts, each one will be marked with the manufacturer, and thats about as much as i know, i am in the process myself of researching these rifles, and soon getting a Service grade from the CMP.

throat erosion and muzzle erosion
cmp also sells ammo, they have the greek m2 ball you are looking for
make sure to only use military ball ammo0 -
Throat Erosion (chamber wear), and muzzle erosion, these will help you determine how good the barrel is. Most generally both numbers under 3 are good, The greek M2 is standard .30 caliber ball ammo made for the M1. 0 -
i wonder if the boyds stock is a positive addition ?
not long ago i bought a s.a garand in very nice condition for 600 .i thought that was a good price for it .a friend owned it also who coudnt stand the recoil any more due to his medical condition .it is a springfield in the 2,8xx,xxx range .nice looking and shoots great also .

Boyd stocks are nice but I like the USGI stocks even if they are beat up a bit. Make no mistake, the Boyd stocks are pretty. [:D] 0 -

nmyers is a good guy and very knowledgable on USGI stuff0 -
CMP sells new M1 stocks. Both WWII contour (my preference) and post-WWII (Korean, and later) contour stocks. Comes with a DOD cartouche stamped into the left side (the one with the eagle and stars inside a square). Also, you'll have CMP papers to go with the stock. May increase value. Boyd's has a reputation of making Garand stocks that are "beefier" (fatter) than military stocks. To a purist, it just doesn't look correct. Joe 0 -
