My dad and I have a small wager that I can't get 750 miles out of one tank of diesel out of my Dodge Cummins dually. I was allow to fill my tank up as full as I could get it. I manage to get 35 gallons in it plus what I had in there, couldn't have been much. Then my father put a seal on the fuel cap, what a sad world when a father can't trust his own daughter. I've been driving under 45, windows up, and I even have my mirrors folded back. I don't used my brakes and coast to stops when I can. I've been getting over 24 mpg this way (no b.s.)
So feeling a loss coming on,He thought he'd be smart and send me to Indy for supplies for the shop knowing I would have to take the interstate and lets face it I can't get any kind of mileage on the interstate, but I surprised him and took back roads and smaller highways. It took me also the whole day, but I had good company and good music so it wasn't so bad. I'm still averaging 23.8 mpg. Sad thing is he told me it was a large load and I need to take the dually, but it turned out to be 2 small boxes, would of easily fit in my Vibe.
Right now I have 3/4 of a tank and 300 plus miles down. If I can get 450 miles by the time I get down to a half tank I should be able to easily get 300 with the other half. My mileage goes to he11 after my tank starts to get low so it's going to be close. I've got a nickel riding on this wager, plus bragging rights so SO I WILL NOT LOSE!!

My Dad's new 2500 series Cummins Diesel is up to 21 mpg...I hope it continues to increase. It takes a while to break these engines in and the mpg usually increases for quite a while. 0 -

My truck has a mpg average reading on the display. It may not be truely accurate, but it gives me something to go by. I've been driving with one eye on it.0 -

I did that once Jacob when I was pulling an RV back from Sommerset Ky. I figure out I was getting 13.5 and the display on my truck said the same. I was quite impress on how accurate it was.0 -

I did that once Jacob when I was pulling an RV back from Sommerset Ky. I figure out I was getting 13.5 and the display on my truck said the same. I was quite impress on how accurate it was.
It works, alright, but it would help and be easier if all cars had the MPG thing...
My oldest brother friend, Chris, picked me up from school, when gas was cheap, and to fill the BIG truck he had (some kinda dodge ram hemi or some stuff) it took him 110.00 + to fill it up...0 -
Jack the drive wheels up, start it up, put it in gear, and let it idle. Sorta like what they tried in Ferris Bueller's day off with the ferrari, but not in reverse... 0 -

one other thing, Don't know how many miles is on your outfit, but after you have won this and you have sucked fumes to do it. you may want to change your fuel filter because you will pull whatever crud is floating around at the bottom and wintertime ain't the time to have a filter plug up or freeze, just lookin out for you CGR

actually, she can just take the gallons she put in, then when the trip is verified, and she puts more fuel in, it would be right, because she isnt going to make it there AND back on the ONE tank.. So actually, it would work, but i was telling him how to do it [:p]0 -
My dad pulled his full size car behind his motorhome with the motor running from New York to Florida on half a tank of gas. He left it running to lube the trans as the factory advised him to do in the 70's., it was easier for him to do that than pull the drive shaft out.
This is just a thought, but what if you were to start up your truck and let it idle in nutural , then have a friend pull you around for 3 or 4 hundred miles and show your dad that you still had a 1/4 tank left. Wouldn't that blow his mind and win you some bucks. Just a thought.0 -

I've got the 4:10 in mine with a 5 speed and I was getting over 19 mpg until I put a 800lb steel shell on the back...now 15mpg is my tops. I've also noticed that I'm not getting anywhere near the gas mileage I used to get...seems to be decreasing with age. I've got around 180,000 miles on mine right now.0 -

Not with higher speeds...I've got the 4:10 rear end and if I go over 55 mph, my gas mileage drops significantly.0 -

Mine too drops like a rock after 55. Before the bet I drove around testing different speeds. I get my best from 40 to 53. I can get anywhere around 24-28 mpg around those speeds. After 55 it drops to a low of 13-14 mpg at 75 to 80. But when I get to 90 it starts to come back up to 16-17 mpg.
Right now I'm at 350 miles with the fuel needle between the 3/4 and 1/2 mark. The displays says I have 292 miles more I can go. Son it's going to be close.0 -
I have never owned a diesel vehicle, but I HEARD that if you let the tank run dry, and the injectors get air in them, you then have to open a fitting and bleed the injectors to get fuel to them. I was watching a fellow do this one day, and he said, "Never let a diesel run out of fuel." 0 -
You have to open the valve on the water separator. It is a pain because it takes a little while to get fuel back into it. I don't plan to run out. I was reading another post and found out I could of gotten almost 40 gallons in my tank I only got 35 plus what I had in it. I know it wasn't much. 0 -

The reason you get less mileage from the lower part of your tank is because your sending unit is off, just like the rest of them. When I worked at SeaRay Boats, we pulled all of the sending units and tweaked them to make them read right. Like your Diesel, ya don't want to run out of gas in a BIG boat!

I'm jealous, my 93 F150 barely goes 400 miles when I use both tanks and that's 34 gallons. On a good day she gets 14 mpg, average is 10-12. She's got a 300 with multi port injection, the crappy Mazda 5-speed, and 3.55 gearing in the axles (4x4). 0 -
My Ranger gets mid-20s when I run it in 5th gear between 2000 and 2500 RPM. After 2500 RPM, the mileage takes a major dump into the low teens. 0 -
Yeah, well I got a Dakota with a 4.7.

Once while driving down the interstate in my '97 F350 Crew-cab 4X4 Stroke, I was day dreaming and let one tank run out.[:I][B)] I reached down and switched tanks, but it took a mile or two before it ran good. It ran very, rough and would not hardly do 30 mph.0 -
