Far-reaching Gun Ban Would Cripple The Second Amendment
-- McCarthy's bill to outlaw millions of guns

The Democrats are back in power and their anti-gun wing is trying to
make up for lost time as far as gun control legislation is concerned.
There are a number of bills that have been introduced already, but
GOA will be there to meet every challenge.

Right now, we need your help in beating back a reintroduction of the
so-called "assault weapons ban," the infamous bill that
    outlawed many
types of firearms based primarily on cosmetics, misinformation and
    scare tactics.

The bill is HR 1022, and last month it was introduced by the Queen of
Gun Control, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY). Its 30 cosponsors
comprise a list of the usual anti-gun suspects -- so we need to make
sure that no pro-gun congressmen are duped into signing their names
onto this anti-gun piece of trash.

McCarthy entitled her bill the Assault Weapons Ban and Law
Enforcement Protection Act of 2007, knowing these firearms aren't
"assault weapons" and knowing the bill she is reintroducing does
nothing to prevent violent crime -- since the guns in question have
    seldom been used in crime.

McCarthy's bill would reinstate all of the now defunct provisions
related to semi-automatic firearms and large capacity magazines. The
manufacture and/or importation of many firearms would be prohibited.
This would be paired with a strong ban on the possession or transfer
of detachable magazines having moderate or larger capacities.

Truth be told, HR 1022 is the old ban on steroids. Fourteen more
guns are listed by name than in the '94 ban, and only one
    "dangerous"
feature, such as a pistol grip, is needed to make a "nice"
    gun into a
"bad" gun. The old ban required two "dangerous"
    features, such as a
pistol grip and a folding stock. This distinction effectively
expands the scope of the bill to ban a far broader variety of
    firearms.

Since the U.S. Department of Justice has already documented that the
previous "assault weapons" ban did absolutely nothing to stop
    violent
crime, it is clear that HR 1022 is simply a direct attack on the 2nd
    Amendment rights of gun owners.

More than 10 years ago, the anti-gun lobby and their friends in the
media began waging a campaign to frighten people and convince them
that the so-called "assault weapons" are rapid fire machine guns
when, in reality, they are merely semi-automatic firearms that look
    different than traditional hunting rifles.

This bill is designed to cripple the firearms industry while
infringing on the rights of all gun owners. It is proof positive
that the rabid, anti-gun members of Congress really don't care about
stopping crime or saving lives -- they just want to take our guns
    away.

What are the odds of this bill getting through the Congress? Who
knows? House Speaker Nancy Pelosi just gave Rep. Jefferson a seat on
the Homeland Security Panel. Jefferson was the guy who had $90,000
dollars of bribe money stuffed into his freezer.

If the liberals now in control of the Democrat Party feel they are
strong enough to get away with that kind of outrage, they may feel
they can get away with passing a gun ban that does nothing but punish
    law-abiding gun owners.

We must take seriously every anti-gun bill introduced in this
Congress. But, at the same time, this bill is an opportunity to beat
up those members of Congress who hate guns and will stop at nothing
to eliminate our constitutional right to keep and bear arms.

If we can give them a good thrashing on HR 1022, we may be able to
discourage them from bringing forth more bills like this. And that
is why we need your help in beating down HR 1022 quickly, and making
sure that none of the good guys get suckered into supporting this.

ACTION: Please use the pre-written letter below to direct your
comments to your Congressman. And circulate this alert to your
    pro-gun friends and family.

You can visit the Gun Owners Legislative Action Center at
http://www.gunowners.org/activism.htm to send your Representative a
pre-written e-mail message. And, you can call your Representative
    toll-free at 1-877-762-8762.

    ---- Pre-written letter to your Representative ----

    Dear Representative:

I'm sure you are aware that Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) has
reintroduced, in the form of HR 1022, the Clinton semi-auto gun ban
that sunset a couple of years ago. The Justice Department reported
that the ban's impact on gun violence was small at best, and too
    small to be statistically valid.

By contrast, states adopting concealed carry laws had significant
decreases in violent crime while states and cities maintaining strict
gun control laws continued to have the nation's highest rates of
    violent crime.

I agree with Gun Owners of America that the only people affected by
the so-called "assault weapons ban" of 1994 were law-abiding gun
owners, manufacturers and importers. Clearly, this bill is nothing
less than an infringement on the rights of gun owners. And we won't
    stand for it.

The supporters of HR 1022 will be identified as anti-gun Congressmen
and, hopefully, targeted for defeat at the next election. As your
constituent, I urge you to oppose this or any other gun grabbing bill
    in the 110th Congress.

    Sincerely,
    0

On Tuesday, GOA-supported legislation passed the House of
Representatives by a whopping 322-99 vote. The bill -- introduced by
Rep. Bobby Jindal (R-LA) -- is similar to the Vitter amendment which
passed the Senate earlier this month.

GOA has kept its members abreast of Jindal's important bill (HR
5013), as it would legislatively block federal agents from
confiscating firearms during an emergency. Jindal's language would
even give aggrieved gun owners a cause of action in federal court to
recover their firearms and would recompense victorious plaintiffs for
    their attorney's fees.

Both the House and Senate have passed Emergency Protection language,
albeit in different forms. So GOA will keep you updated on progress
    related to this important legislation.

You can go to http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2006/roll401.xml to see how
your Representative voted on the Jindal bill.

In other news, the House Judiciary Committee was supposed to consider
McCarthy's Brady Enhancement legislation, H.R. 1415, this past
Wednesday. This bill will spend millions of dollars to further prop
up the unconstitutional Brady Law and would allow the federal
government to troll through state misdemeanor, diversion,
psychiatric, tax, and even library records -- all for the purpose of
finding new reasons to seize guns from law-abiding Americans.

Thankfully, there are some Representatives who are getting your
message of opposition loud and clear. A few Republicans on the
committee are ready to vote against the bill, but we don't know yet
if it will be enough to kill it in committee.

While the bill is not scheduled to come up until September, GOA asks
you to keep an eye out for future alerts on this subject throughout
the summer. We will be asking many of you to contact your
Representative in the district -- when he or she is home during the
    August recess.

Your response in opposition to the McCarthy bill is important because
GOA is the only national pro-gun group opposing the bill in Congress.

So please stay tuned. Thank you.

They are much smaller than the NRA, but believe in no compromise on the second amendment rights that we have, unlike the NRA at times.

Yes, life member of GOA and of the NRA.

There is no comparison as to message and stance. GOA kicks the NRA in the nuts every time and is no-compromise on Amendment II. GOA is head and shoulders above the NRA in the area of the RTKBA.

The problem is membership. NRA has millions of members, for a variety of reasons, many which I have posted on before. The NRA is the "big dog" on the block due to this membership. Therein lays the danger. The "big dog" is a secret "ankle biter" of the RTKBA, but gets to claim that they speak for America's gun-owners. They do not speak for millions of America's gun-owners and are a danger to the future of the RTKBA, period.

GOA is an up and coming organization. As more and more see the truth about the NRA, the GOA, SAF, JPFO and others will slowly gain support.

The NRA is a historical and continuing compromiser on RTKBA issues. The Second Amendment that the NRA "supports" is absolutely okay with government restrictions and infringements on the RTKBA. The NRA actively promotes, supports and in some cases assists in drafting legislation furthering restrictions of the RTKBA.

The NRA's Second Amendment is primarily about the privilege to hunt, participate in shooting sports, shooting competitions and to have the government controlled privilege of self-defense, e.g. CCW laws. This rather than fighting for free and unrestricted carry. Remember, a CCW is an acknowledgment that a citizen must gain the governments "permission" to have and bear arms, all the while under specific government regulation (infringement).

The NRA's Second Amendment has nothing to do with a free citizens ability to own and carry the same, or similar personal firearms as the military, which is exactly what the founders intended. The NRA's Second Amendment also fails to mention, that the bottom line of the RTKBA is to give citizens the ability to throw off a tyrannical government and as such, the ability to keep and bear modern military arms is an absolute.

The NRA does not support Amendment II as written or intended by the founders, period and unarguably. It is what it is.

Ask and ye shall get an answer. Albeit an answer that many do not like to hear. However, it is not disputable in its basic facts, although some will try. Keep your eye on the ball as the flaming begins. There will be an avoidance of the substantive issues and the "attack the messenger" tactic will start.

Just keep your eye on the ball......

If the NRA did their job, GOA would never had come into existence.

From what I have seen the GOA is bent on destroying the NRA.
Other than that they seem like a good pro gun group.
    0
  • MVP
As a gun dealer I also find it Ironic how every Distributor in the business promotes NRA membership but I have yet to see a large firearm company promote the GOA. If the NRA is so bad for gun owners than why would the people/businesses who have the most at stake, business wise, promote so heavily for the NRA.

  • jpwolf
The NRA is destroying itself. The reason the NRA enjoys this support is it's institutional nature. The NRA is no different than the politicians in D.C. It is a bureaucracy that's only interest is perpetuating itself. It's nothing personal, just business you see?. The supreme court may settle this once and for all. Bad for the NRA. Good for gunowners. A lawsuit the NRA fought against being heard by the SCOTUS, I might add......Wonder why???? Hmmmmmm.....

[:(!]Perhaps it has escaped your attention that the only reason someone hasn't already taken your gun rights away is because NRA was there. No other organization has done anything for your gun rights that is on par with NRA. If you want to splinter off with one of these small, non-influential organizations, that's you business. But you shouldn't bash the organization that has rescued your rights so many times over the years.

Your ignorance is showing sir. Please do some simple research and put down the kool-aid that Wayne handed you.[:o)]

Your position cannot be supported in the light of Amendment II and in light of the NRA's history, period.

    Challenge this.

    Do your own research sir.

The facts and supporting information have been laid out here on GB many, many times.

If you believe that Amendment II enumerates the uninfringed RTKBA, then you can't support your own position. If you do not believe so, then you believe in government approved, government regulated gun-privileges. In that case, "you are the NRA", so to speak.

By the way, don't try to puff up on me, your ass is showing, along with your abject ignorance.

I simply do not have the interest in dealing with you now. How about doing a site search on the subject of the "NRA". You'll find years worth of sources and information, along with some pretty damn good "oatmeal", mostly from the ignorant, such as yourself.

    One more thing DocBAE...

Finding out the truth about the NRA is kind of like finding out that your wife, whom you trust and love dearly, has been cheating on you since before you were married.

You run along now and do that research, then when and IF you have really looked at the issue and in the face of the brutal truth, you still want to step up and square off, well then I will accommodate you in a civil and detailed debate.

Until you do your homework son, I'll let you go ape-snit by yourself, ok?

First and foremost I am not your son. You are not old enough to be my daddy. You havent said one thing to suppport your position, all you hve done is postured and insulted. Which leads me to believe that you dont know anything but what someone else has told you. Once again if you have any facts to back up what you're saying, lets hear them, but if all you have is smart-ass rhetoric, then you'll do well to keep it to yourself. I have been a member of NRA for many years, and I know what they've done to protect my rights. You sir my do well to do your own thinking and actually look for yourself, instead of just repeating what you hear. Unless you will provide facts, I will not respond to you again, and will chalk you up as one of the masses that bought the anti-NRA propaganda proffered by the liberals.
    good luck to you sir.

    Yawn...

Come back when you aren't afraid to do a bit of research yourself. It is easily obtainable, even here on the GB Forums.

Afraid of what you may find? Afraid that you may have to munch on a bit of crow? Afraid of having to defend the indefensible?

    All the above?

You are a newbie and normally, i'd give you some deference, but frankly, you deniers are tiring and I just can't muster up the interest in spoon feeding you information that you can easily find yourself. Again, do some research if it interests you. If not, have a nice day and enjoy the continuing demise of the RTKBA.

As I said earlier in this thread. Keep your eye on the ball....The poster has been attacked, as expected, but not with any refutation of the issue....Keep your eye on the ball.

My "attack" as you call it, was not directed at the poster of the original thread, it was meant for and entirely directed at you. You talk about no refutation of issue, but you have done nothing but insult me, and spew rhetoric, not one fact. You should have directed your last post to yourself. As for being a newbie to the forums I am not one bit ashamed of not having the time to sit on my ass in front of the computer that much. I actually get out and shoot, compete at clubs all over the Southeast, meet and talk to other gun owners and shooters, oh yeah, and run a business. Seems to me all you do is sit in front of your computer and call people names because they dont wanna swallow your oatmeal sandwich. You arent intimidating, and as I believe in the first amendment also, I will "puff up" at you any time I damn well please.
I sincerely hope this is the last time I have to talk to you

DocBAE really look this stuff up. You should do your own research regardless and not just blindly ask people for the answers. It's cool if you want to find out info to ask for the resources, and they were given. Pick up the ball and run with it.

If you want to debate or talk about it then you should ask the question accordingly.

For your information I'm not a NRA hating person myself. I personally do not agree with them making concessions though on a right given under the constitution. This issue should be a no brainer in my opinion. The other thing I have a major problem with is all the begging the NRA does after you become a memeber. They have wasted my dues time over agian asking me to give more. Honestly I get something in the mail asking for more at least every week.
