Power Steering Fluid
Dumb question, but can you use transmission fluid in a Ford power steering pump.

Some Fords call for ATF, some call for regular power steering fluid. Consult your owner's manual or service manual to verify. 0 -
My 2000 F-350 owners manual says mercon atf for power steering. 0 -
dad has more than once. 0 -
is all i have ever used in any power steering unit, ford, dodge, g.m. never had any problems 0 -
Come to think of it, my truck is currently operating on a mix of the two for the past 4 years. I'm working on flushing it out. 0 -
Thanks [:)] The Mercon worked like magic! 0 -
I don't mean to be a thread crapper, but where is the power steering fluid leak?
Reason I ask is power steering fluid is flammable.
Saw a car once that had a pretty good PS leak, and the owner just kept on putting in fluid until one day it leaked bad enough to catch on fire. A combination of hot fluid and a hot exhaust manifold burned his car to the ground.0 -
Yes...hydraulic fluid....power steering fluid...auto tranny fluid is flammable.
I was 17 and smoking the tires out of the high school parking lot when I busted the smallblock off the frame (motor mount broke) and when it came down it severed the auto tranny cooling lines going to the radiator....the auto tranny fluid sprayed on the headers and proceeded to burn right in front of the school.....
My principal was a happy man that day......lol. Had to tow the smoking hull home for a rebuild.
There is a milspec hydraulic fluid that is a little less flammable......but it would be a lie to say it too won't burn.0 -
can also be added to diesel to help clean injectors, lube pumps ect 0 -
try the Bitog forums I personally like Maxlife P/S works in everything 0 -
Any oil sprayed on a hot exaust system will make your life very interesting. 0
