Dr. Phil Blames Video Games for Virginia Tech Massacre
In the wake of yesterday's horrific shootings at Virginia Tech, gadfly attorney Jack Thompson was not the only one who was quick to place blame on violent video games.
Noted T.V. shrink Dr. Phil McGraw appeared on CNN's Larry King Live last night to discuss the rampage. During the course of the program, the following exchange took place:
LARRY KING: Why, though - OK, you want to kill someone, you're crazed, you're a little nuts, girlfriend drops you, why do you kill innocent people?. Dr. McGraw, are they treatable?
DR. PHIL: Well, Larry, every situation is different. The question really is can we spot them. And the problem is we are programming these people as a society. You cannot tell me - common sense tells you that if these kids are playing video games, where they're on a mass killing spree in a video game, it's glamorized on the big screen, it's become part of the fiber of our society. You take that and mix it with a psychopath, a sociopath or someone suffering from mental illness and add in a dose of rage, the suggestibility is too high.
And we're going to have to start dealing with that. We're going to have to start addressing those issues and recognizing that the mass murders of tomorrow are the children of today that are being programmed with this massive violence overdose.

I don't disagree with him, however I think the blame lies not with the inanimate object (video game, movies) but with the family dynamic.
How many of us don't know exactly what our kids are doing or watching?

I agree with Dr. Phil. We live in a backward society that tells kids that sex is wrong, but killing is okay.
You can't watch porn but Grand Theft Auto is fine. How many zombies can you kill? No, you can't see Janet Jackson's breast.

I believe that these video games contribute to these shootings. A kid practices for years, for hours a day, shooting people on the screen. It would have to implant the idea in his head that he might want to try it on some real people.
We have to ask ourselves, why are there so many school shootings today?
I went to school in the fifties and sixties, and there were very few shootings. The Texas Tower shootings I remember clearly. Other than that I know of no school shootings in the fifties and sixties.
Firearms were much more readily available then.

Ah Crapola.... I spent my entire childhood shooting every mangy critter "Esst" of the Pecos with my Hubley "Colt .45" and I play video games as well...
I think I'd remind Dr Pill that this crap does predate video Games....

I believe the Dr.Pill's of that day blamed Yosimite Sam Cartoons of some crap like that.
Please give me a break.... The Stress that liveing creates is more than enough to set a week minded person into rehab. and from there you are only an inch from the point of no return...fail to vent or see you need help one time and all hell breaks loose.0 -
I think for the wrong kid, that is allowed to play constantly, that it can be dangerous,...........enables a screwed up kid to detach himself from reality, and lets be real here, with some of the parents around today, we have plenty of screwed up kids.

Cheap cop out. The answer is prolly more in the lines of poor parenting. I have been playing video games for 22 years now and havent killed a soul. Any most of the where war/fighting games. Contra didnt make me go shoot anyone and Call of Duty 3 isnt either. Parents dont spend as much time with there kids because of work and after school activities. Kids arent raised in church like they used to be either. But i dont think video games are the problem. The insane media coverage may help too. Like hey i wanna be famous so i am gonna do this. 0 -
Everybody and his dog are looking for someone to blame. And the unfortunate answer is- sometimes there is NO ONE to blame. Except the shooter. I will throw up on the next person that comments about "he was just a child". He was a 23 yr old colege senior. At the age of 23 i had 6 ys of military servce behind me- and was older than most of my enlisted soldiers. 0 -
If you are talking about my response,..........notice I said for the WRONG kid. I played video games for years too, although not for 8 hours a day like some do. I agree on the parenting, and the lack of church. Please read the details of a post!!

Video games are not the problem. I've been playing video games for the majority of my life, many of them the violent ones you see in the news (Grand Theft Auto, Halo, Doom, etc...) HOWEVER... The reason I am not shooting up my school today is becuase my parents didn't let me sit in front of the TV all day playing these games. And when I was playing them, they told me 'that's just a game, it is not real, you do not do this in real life.' If you let your kids waste away in front of the TV all day doing nothing but playing these games, there is a good chance there will be problems. However, if you explain that what you see on TV and movies and games is not real, and explain why those things shouldnt be done, then in my mind you have been a responsible parent and done the right thing. 0 -

I dunno, I have never been a believer that video games or tv causes violence. Look at all of you guys who grew up watching Westerns where John Wayne or Clint Eastwood shoots all of the bad guys. Do you want to kill people? How do you explain the 99% of kids who grow up playing these games and don't participate in horrible acts like the Virginia Tech shooting? I grew up watching Westerns, G.I. Joe and playing video games like "Duke Nukem", "Doom", "James Bond" and I couldn't even imagine pointing even an unloaded gun at a person for no reason other then self-defense. I honestly don't know if there is one single thing that can be blamed for this. Each case and person is different.

I don't know about you, but if i did something I wasn't supposed to and if it warranted. i got a boot,slap,spank, and my moms favorite "Stop it or I'll Crack your heads together".[:D] God I love that women.
And by no means where my parents child abusers but they let me know when i was misbehaving. all this Shat about don't hit your children it will scare them. they maybe scared but G*D dammit they know right from wrong. Time Out doesn't do a damn thing never has never will.

Spare the rod, spoil the child. Marc1301 i didnt see your post when i started in on my reply. I wasnt talking about it. Just going off of Dr. Phils statement. Allowing the child to play games all day is still bad parenting. They arent taught that there are consequences for every action. They arent whooped like they should be. (I had a smart mouth so i got beat pretty frequently). And i agree that time out doesnt do anything. 0 -

Got many a butt bustin in my youth. Still love my mom & dad, don't hate them or anybody else for it, I know right from wrong. Spanked my kids when they needed it, in fact my 25 y/o son has JUST told me that he can now see all that happened to him is his fault, not mine. I see where the violence MAY be a contributor to this because in my youth there weren't any video games. Now there are and our youth can see the death and gore they causes and, in a way, desensitizes them.

Dr. Phil holds a Masters in experimental psychology and a Doctorate in clinical psychology.
After he got out of school he joined his father in his psychology practice but found that he couldn't hack it and bailed. He then went to work using his training as a psychological consultant for attorneys doing trial work. Ten years or so ago he was hired by Oprah's law firm when she got involved in that big mess down here with the beef industry.
He used to sell his expertise in reading people and psychologically manipulating them, the facts be damned, now he does this for himself.

Dr. Phil once claimed 8 kids a day were dying in gun accidents. Someone did the math and it came out to over 1800 a year according to Philsy. The reality was less than 200 a year. 0 -

Actually, even such conservative publications as National Geographic published satistics showing the more children were killed riding bicycles each year than were killed with guns.0
