glock saves officer's life
I saw a training video where an officer had his duty weapon, a standard issue glock model 22, taken away from him by an individual he was attempting to arrest. This officer had a k-9 partner who attacked the perp. The crook slapped at the dog with the glock which caused a stove pipe. He then turned the pistol on the officer while holding him to the ground. Of course it wouldn't fire. I suppose he missed the class on how to "tap, roll, and rack. A very important piece of information if you intend to carry a glock. The crook threw the pistol and ran. The officer found his back up piece, a bersa .380 and emptied the gun into the perp. who died. I guess a glock can save a life. [:o)]

So just so I'm clear the cop emptied clip in the back of a fleeing man? 0 -
yup, you are clear on it. except it was more like back, leg, arm, wrist. [:D] 0 -
Nice to hear he used a Bersa as a backup. I've got one but hardly carry it. Does make a nice hot weather CCW. 0 -

I agree0 -
One other thing I'm not clear on, I always thought that the .380 was kind of a ghetto 9mm, and not all that reliable. 0 -

I don't know about the ghetto thing. but my .380 has always been dependable although the caliber is really too weak for my taste.0 -
I've really been going through boxes of ammo on my .38 special, and I'm thinking that I would like a .45 0 -
I like either, I thinking the .45 would be more expensive. Why aren't you happy with your .38? 0 -
No no it's not that I'm not happy with the .38. It's a great revolver, it's a 2.5" barrel 5 shot, it's a solid gun. my complaint is that I have basically bear paws for hands and it feels a little small 0 -

It is hard to shoot him in the chest when running away, so shooting him in the back seems to be a good alternative. I hope the perp died in gut wrenching agony.0 -

Actually it was in the back of an "unarmed" fleeing man.
Just so we are straight... nice shooting with the Bersa, officer. To bad you didnt have a second mag to dumb into him.0 -
The deceased had made it clear he was a threat, if he had got away then he would have continued to endanger people, so it will most likely be a good shoot and in accordance with his department policy. quote:Originally posted by Laredo Lefty

It was within policy and a good shoot. He's lucky to be alive, which was the purpose of the training video0 -
That Glock would be my best friend, forever - but I wouldn't have one
to begin with.0 -

Just so we are straight....the "unarmed fleeing man" had already shown a willingness to kill a police officer.
I'll save my sympathy for someone who deserves it0 -

Hey Rack......... You misunderstood my message. The perp should be dead...... and with extreme prejudice.0 -

And?
In this case, I see no problem.0 -

Maybe I've being naive, I admit I grew up in privileged neighbourhood. But if someone is running the other way they can't shoot. and if that's the case couldn't the police officer use a non-lethal method to get the perp?0 -
cantbecivil......... You dont use less than lethal on a person who has already demonstrated that he wants to kill you and will kill you if given another chance.
Less lethal is for uncooperative people who may be combative but are not considered a deadly threat.
This guy had already tried to kill the officer once. You would be a fool to get into a position where he would be given a second chance to end your life.
Although fleeing, he is still a deadly threat to any ofcr or citizen who encounters him. For that reason shooting him is justified.0 -

That's fair, he has shown that he doesn't give a rats ass about other humans, and frankly I wouldn't want him near my son or my friends.
Thank you for talking to me about this instead of just attacking me.0 -
Your welcome....... Why would I want to attack you?
Explaining things rationally to someone who may not entirely understand the situation tactically or legally is the best way to promote understanding of why cops do what they do.0 -

No. There is no "stun" setting on a gun.[:D]
Seriously though, given what this guy did and was more than likely capable of doing, it's not an issue of whether or not to take him in alive, but whether he dies with tired feet or not.0 -

Because other forums I'm on I would be attacked for asking for clarification as to the proper way things happen. That's why I like this forum so much, I can ask a question and get an answer with minimal amount of snarkiness0 -
Hopefully he didnt die right away, he should suffer some. 0 -
In Florida a citizen can use deadly force in cases of the commission of a forceable felony. So, I am sure an officer has the same right if not more. They are charged with protecting the public as well as their well being. Whether or not the suspect was fleeing or looking for another weapon is a question of fact. If some one just tried to kill me, it is no great leap of faith to assume he was headed for another deadly weapon. 0 -

Best comment so far!
The rule of thumb I've heard for fleeing felons is that they must have committed such a violent/heinous act, that you've witnessed, that their continued freedom contitutes a grave threat to anyone they might contact. This incident doesn't seem to qualify, but I suppose if the officer didn't see the perp toss the gun he would reasonably believe his attacker was still armed, which would change the dynamic a bit.
[You just know if it were a civilian instead of an LEO, he'd be charged with voluntary manslaughter at the least.]0
