Saw something today I?d never seen before
I saw a hawk chasing a buzzard. I've seen hawks chase various kinds of birds before, and crows chasing hawks. I've seen hawks catch birds a few times and once years ago I saw a hawk pull a squirrel off the side of a pine tree.
This was the first time I've ever seen a hawk chase a buzzard. He caught up with him once and took a nip out of his tail feathers. That buzzard wasn't just floating around the sky like they usually do. That boy was moving out. [:D]

i watched a little finch type bird go after charlie, the hawk in our neighborhood, because he got too close the the nest. didn't see charlie fly over that tree for a few days. 0 -
I don't want to hijack the thread, but I have a question for jamesrk. You seem like a very knowledgable man, when did the Carrion Crow migrate to the US? I have only recently (3 years) been aware of them. Sure we've always had crows, but these eat meat! 0 -
A few times I've been out discing or chisel plowing and watched a hawk fly from poll to poll back and forth across the field hoping I would scare up something. 0 -

I appreciate the complement, but I'm not that knowledgeable. I am ashamed to admit I didn't even know they were a migratory bird until the feds put a hunting season on them. They stay in North Carolina and Virginia year round, so it never occurred to me they were migratory. I just always thought they were pests about a half step above flying rats (pigeons). I've seen them pecking at road kill for about as long as I can remember, so I'm guessing they've been around for a while.0 -
drjew - not to be pompus, but are you really referring to the
Carrion Crow (C. corone)(Eurasian)? or one of the N. American birds of the same genus? I am not aware that the Carrion Crow has migrated to the US.0 -

just last week I saw a Kestral (sparrow hawk) swoop down and catch a mouse and as he was pulling up at maybe 20' above the ground a magpie came from nowwhere and hit him and knocked the mouse loose and the magpie dropped down and picked it up and flew off.
But I've seen crows and ravens pull feathers on bald and golden eagles abd red tail hawks. never seen them hit a buzzard yet0
