SAN FRANCISCO-A new city law now requires all guns in homes to have a trigger lock or to be stored in a locked container.
Mayor Gavin Newsom signed the measure into law Wednesday. It also prohibits the sale or possession of firearms on city property and requires the city's six licensed gun dealers to submit their inventory to the police chief every six months, according to Newsom's office.
Nathan Ballard, the mayor's spokesman, said the inventory provision will allow authorities to keep track of guns sold in the city. He said the restriction on guns in homes is the first of its kind in the nation and will help prevent gun violence.
"People steal guns and kids accidentally hurt themselves with guns in the home," he said.
The city has 50,000 legally registered guns and "untold" numbers of illegal guns, Ballard said.
In 2006, a court struck-down a voter-approved ban on handgun possession by city residents. The National Rifle Association successfully argued the city did not have the authority to pass the ordinance under state law.
The ban would have limited handgun possession to law enforcement officers and those who need guns as part of their professions.
Ballard said the new law was created in consultation with legal scholars. City officials believe they are on solid legal ground, he said.

Well, partly. It'll cut down on the number of burglars and home invaders who would be hurt. Because the city just made it safer for them.
Sweet Mother of Mercy, who is stupid enough to do this?0 -

Sadly , I wish I could say something in San Franciscos' defense other than it looks great on a postcard. But I cant. Been there, done that, havent been back in 10 years. 0 -
Doubt i'll ever go there anyway, and doubley doubt i'll EVER live there. Hopefully their citizens can stop this madness. 0 -
Look, it is just a whole buncha flaming libs, HELPING the hand of Darwin to rest heavy on their souls....let them do it!!! 0 -
If ignorance is bliss, those elected individuals must really be happy.
Been trying to think of a way to start a national movement to ban
automobiles since they contribute to more deaths than guns. For the
life of me I can't think on how to get a decent, twisted plot going.0 -
its already state law they have to be locked up if children are present/there is a "reasonable" possibility a child(under a certain age, I forget what age) could get access to the firearm.
So now this law makes everyone lock up their guns, even someone living alone in an apartment/house, or an adult couple in a house with no kids.
Yet its supposed to stop kids from being hurt.... when all it does is expand the law in a way unrelated to the current "protections" for kids.0 -
I read somewhere a person living in S.F.is more likely do die from a assault from a fiendly weapon than a deadly weapon.

First of its kind? I'm pretty sure DC has the same "gun must be locked up without ammo" law. 0 -
Where are the statistics to back up the claims by the mayor's spokesman? How many kids have hurt themselves with guns in the home? I'm not sure about that, but I know about police officers who have been shot with guns (all non-registered of course). I've lived in San Francisco for the past 5 years mainly because of a job with a 6 figure salary, but enough is enough. I can't take any more of this self-destructive nonsense imposed upon us by left wing nut jobs. Drug dealers and gang members will be very pleased with this law. I guess the mayor found time to pass this insane rule in between screwing his best friend's wife, doing blow, and slicking his hair back. 0 -
Are you sure he wasn't screwing his best (boy) friend ??
I really love to visit San Francisco - I feel so SAFE there !!

throw the locked box at the perp![:o)]
having a gun locked in a box just makes it easier for the perp to carry your gun away. he knows what to look for now, if youre not home.0 -
