Dirty bombs are nothing more than someones attempt to scare the unknowing populace.
The amount of explosives required to distribute radioactive material to a "suitable" distance at a "suitable level" would effectively destroy the material. For the radioactive material to to be effective it has to be very "hot" and very concentrated.
The best way for a dirty bomb to be effective would have it blow the material into large chucks that are evenly scattered. The problem with this is that those chunks are very easy to clean up. Just send in one of the many rolling robots in, have it pick it up and drop it in a lead box.
Radioactivity is generally misunderstood and therefore feared. For example, did you know that you get more radiation from eating a banana (from K41) than you would get standing next to the reactor compartment in a nuclear sub (at 100%) for a week? Also, the amount of radiation exposure in the twenty miles surrounding the 3 Mile Island plant during and after the accident there was about 1.4 millirem. The yearly average of radiation exposure in that area is about 100 millirem from natural sources. If you fly from Chicago to Los Angeles, you will recieve about 5 millirem of gamma radiation (from outer space!). The average X-Ray will give you about 6 millirem.
Remember that the key to minimizing radiation exposure is Time-Distance-Shielding.
All that being said, if they ever do detonate a dirty bomb here, I am going to get rich volunteering to clean it up!

If the countrys around the terroist know we will level them wouldn't they be thinking about stopping the terroist for their own safety[?]

I don't think so. They would justify it by arguing to themselves that everyone so killed would go straight to "heaven"

dirty bombs are only scare tactics, if they realy want to hurt us they will put antifreeze in our tooth paste or rat poison in our wheat or sewage in our canned shrimp, those terrorists are clever.

The same way that there are contractors getting rich over in the desert right now.

I am (or should I say was) trained in handling radiological waste. I really isn't as dangerous as some would lead you to believe. The guys that do it for nuclear power plants get paid big bucks. Imagine what the rate would be with the government footing the bill?

If we get hit with some dirty bombs what would our government do,

I imagine the government has another Act (law) in the wings, waiting for just such a scenario. The UNpatriot Act was passed real quick after 911. Trampling the constitutional rights of the citizens of this country is what they seem to think is the answer for terrorism.

To have effective radiation dispersal, it has to enter the prevailing winds/jetstream. Only fallout can do that. Joe
