'69 Firebird Shift Knob???

This is embarrasing. I'm trying to put new carpet in my '69 conv't and I need to remove the console. I have it all loose but I can't figure out how to remove the shift knob (it's an automatic). I have found and released a snap ring slightly recessed under the knob. Does the plastic disk on top of the knob pry out giving me access to what is retaining the knob?

    I need to pull the console pannel so that I can do some refurbishing and I can't figure out how to pull the knob off. I tried to spin it but it won't budge and I don't want to bust it. It has the push button with the bird in the middle.

    A: To remove the shifter knob, first remove the push button (use a rag to protect it and and plyers to pull it); under the knob, around the shaft is a small snap ring, use expanding snap ring plyers. After you remove the snap ring, the knob should come off.

    Thanks for the replies guys. Right ben, the disc has to come out from the top of the knob but it's all but impossible to pry out without damage given the parts are almost 40 years old. I found, with the help of a fellow from Miami, that by tapping the knob with a rubber mallet, the knob will move down on the shaft a little and that also starts to remove the disc. A little WD-40 a couple of days ago would have made it easier for the knob to drop down.

    Why are the little things so difficult?

    Different application. But I had to remove the linkage from the shifting "dogs" that went into the transmission from under the car. Maybe you're stuck, unless you climb underneath the car to get to the fittings. Joe
