Auto Muffler question?

I am trying to install a new muffler on my car. The current muffler has a pipe that is 1 3/4" and the new muffler is 2", I cannot weld it so I plan on using the muffler adaptor and the clamps. I just wanted to make sure that I get the right size adapter as the people at the auto parts store are no help. Should I get 1 7/8" by 2 1/8"? Thanks.

    Get one of each and take the one that dosen't work back. That's what I do! Tom

    What you need is a 1-3/4 ID to 2" OD adapter.

    I'm just curious, but wouldn't you want the exhaust pipe to go into the adapter and the adapter to go into the muffler? That would mean if the pipe of each is 1/8 " thick it would have to be a 1 3/4" ID to a 2" ID. The 2" would fit over the exhaust pipe and the 1 3/4 would fit into the muffler. I am not an expert, please do not take offense at my question. I am just curious.

    Be sure to figure in the length of the adapter! (and the new muffler) If you plan on using the original mounting points.

    Just make multiple passes and do alot of weaving when you weld it. 1/8 isn't that big of a gap to fill. Heck, I could do it in one pass.

    Pipes are measured by ID. Tubing is measured by OD. Good adaptors are a little "off" to compensate for the gauge of the steel. Joe
