With all that ice it got me to think'n
I posted this a couple years ago, but everytime we have an ice storm I think back to this little event in my childhood, for those of you that didn't see it before, here goes,
My ole hunting buddy when I was a kid was named Donald.
We did everthing 2 boys could do & not end up dead.
It was a COLD winter morning after one of those January Ice Storms here in Missouri.
I had stayed the night at his house, his folks rented a house out in the country, which made it nice for us boys to go huntin.
Well, seeing ALL that ICE got us to thinkin, "SLED RIDE TIME"
So off we went, down the ice covered gravel road to the east about a 1/2 mile the road went down a steep incline [hill we call it]
What a great place to sled / keeping in mind that the bar ditches were pretty deep , we had to stay in the middle of the road.
Now, about half way down the hill was a cross road, with a stop sign on all 4 corners."we were ride'n a sled NOT a car" so to us the stop sign was just another post to not run into.
We commenced to carry out our little venture, [man was that fun]
After about 20 times down the hill, I happened to notice a Pickup comeing from the south going north, we on the other hand were going east."I told Donald" [I Think] But, He didn't listen.
He started down the hill, about that time I noticed that ole truck couldn't stop due to all that ice.
Well the truck made it about 1/2 way thru the intersection when ole
Donald shot under him kinda like a greased pig on roller skates.
{I still remember that old man, watchin him go under the pickup }
Donald, was screaming, the old man was probably pee'n, & little ole me, I was watchin it all take place.
Well, old Donald made it under ok, but was lookin over his shoulder & run head on into the bar ditch, meanwhile, the old man,was trying to see if he just ran over this future Brain Doctor & he ran into the other ditch. as for me, I was easin back towards Donalds House.
About that time I heard that ole man with a shake'n voice call out to Donald "are you ok sonny, come here let me check you out"
Donald, a little shaken & not wanting to provoke this ole man any more got up and went over within arms reach of the ole man. {Boy, was that a mistake}
That ole man looked him up & down, front & back, an then commenced to give Donald, one of those ole fashioned whoopins you only hear about, as for me, I was starting to laugh, when he looked up {the Ole Man}
& saw me.
I found out that day, A Mad Ole Man can run fast enough to catch a 12 year old boy on ice & he never even slipped.
I also found out when we got back to Donalds house that All parents are in a whoopin club.
3 whippins each the old man, Donalds dad, & my Granddad
That was the last time we rode the sled down the road.
I thought you guys might think back to when you were kids

Good read. Thanks. 0 -
this happened the month before, also a reprint from earler post
The year was 1972, december to be exact. 3 future leaders of this country [or so they thought] decided to go hunting one cold saturday morning.
We, I mean they, all lived about 6 blocks apart in a little 1 horse town in Missouri.
They all met at lets call him the better lookin one of the 3's house, and off they went. About 4 blocks from their meeting place was an ole Burlington Railroad tracks. Thats where they headed, they walked, talked, dreamed, & shot at anything that moved.
Well, the next thing you know, they were at the good lookin ones Grandpas farm just at the north end of town, which at the time was the home of several different farm animals, & was boardered by a little bity hot wire on top of an ole woven wire fence.
Oh, did I mention it had been spitting snow all morning ??
Well, while standing outside the fence, Donald, had a nature call hit him,so he was over the fence headed for one of the ole sheds, while Doug [we called him roy - I'm not sure why ] & the good lookin one stood outside the fence just lookin for indians, bears, or anything that might make a target.
I don' think I have ever seen a bear in Missouri, but I'm sure they were probably there hidden in fear from these 3 GREAT WHITE HUNTERS.
The 2 still outside the fence decided to climb over & go to one of the other ole sheds out of the snow & wind & use it as a wilderness cabin.
Ole roy asked if the fence was elect, & if it was turned on ??
Naw, was the reply, it ain't worked since I was a kid.
But ole Grandpa, without even askin had gone to Orschelns [ a farm store ] & bought one of those New WEED EATER FENCERS, [you know the kind, would burn a telephone pole into if it came in contact with the fence] an had hooked it up.
Roy, not wantin to hand his rifle over, maybe, he didn't trust the other guy, climbed the fence, & threw his leg over.
His hunting coat was his dads I think, cause , its to this day still WAY to big for Roy, didn't go all the way over & it got caught in the woven wire, which in turn made his other foot slip off the woven wire.
Down he went dead center contact, with Granpas Brand New Weed Wacker Fencer. Well needless to say he droped his rifle which went off, & was screaming at the top of his lungs "TURN IT OFF" , Hell, I didnt even know it was turned on.
Meanwhile, Donald, thinkin a Bear had gotten one or both of us came running out of the other ole shed, with him pants still down around his ankles, just in time to get ran over by about 4 ponies that had spooked from the gun shot.
You know, I found out that day that ole Roy could undress out of a coat pretty fast, I also found out that Roy didn't have much of a sence of humor.
After about an hour of trying to explain, & maybe a little laughing,
we all headed home.
The good lookin one walked a little behind, cause the other two [ one fried & one smashed ] both still had rifles.
