22mag or 17 hmr

I'm thinking of getting a savage in heavy barrel in either 17hnr or 22mag for coyote gun. i use ma ar-15 now but i would like a bolt action to bring with also. with one would you get

  17HMR boasts superior accuracy, and long range power. The 22 mag will give you more energy upon impact out to about 100yds, albeit less accurately. Beyond that it's 17HMR all the way. I compared the same two calibers and settled on the 17. Glad I did. Don't forget 2550fps.

  Either is not a good coyote gun. There good for groundhogs, and such, but not really that good for yotes. For yotes, get at least a 243.

  I'm in agreement somewhat. A headshot, which is very feasible at 100-150yds with the 17HMR will drop a Coyote. I'd never think about a body shot with either. A 22mag will do the job in the head at less than 100yds. Either way the 17HMR will get the job done more accurately and is explosive out to 150yds. Beyond that, I'll let my buddy with his Hi-Po take the shot.

  i do bring the 223 along also this is just going to be a second gun. probably will just use it on rabbit and other small varmint and maybe the occasional coyote if the shot is right.
