Who invented the double action trigger

Just a trivia question I'm sure most all of you know the answer to?
lets see who gets it right first.[:D]

    Ok, I did a search and found out that it wasn't Browning but it's not a question I had ever thought to ask before.

    The design predates Robert Adams or any other designer/maker of practical and successful revolvers (I put it that way to eliminate guns like the Collier flint revolver -- too good an idea for the manufacturing techniques and primary ignition system of its period, which made such guns far from cost-efficient and almost guaranteed an eventual chain-fire of several or all cylinders at once). A number of bar-hammer, single-shot percussion pistols of the 1820's, very early 1830's at the latest, were double action.

    I'm guessing that, like most features on guns that ended up being patented or at least claimed as "original", double action was tried on some form of matchlock, wheellock, or, at the most modern, very early flintlock. Revolving cylinders, breechloading, adjustable and peep sights, and many other ideas we associate with more-or-less "modern", all were. In answer to the precise question, though, I don't know who was first, or when.

    Actually, come to think of it -- if double-action is defined as the pull of the trigger actually moving the hammer in the process of firing the gun, as opposed to the hammer being manually cocked, then simply released by the trigger pull -- then it would be one of the simpler styles of matchlock, since pulling the trigger actually drew the serpentine (what held the match cord and passed for a hammer on that style of gun) down to the priming charge.

    Still have no idea exactly "who" or "when", though.

    A case could be made that "Leonardo DaVinci" may ave invented it. Since it is a mechanism that acts upon another part that causes progressive mechanical motion as each piece is engaged.

    Or it may pre-date him . The original patent was probably stored and filed at the great library of Alexandria and lost along with everything else that was there !
