Mauser numbers?

Looks like I have two dates on my mauser 1942 and 40 (see pic) what gives?

P.S. Happy 4TH of July!!!!!!!!

The top number is the manufacture code (Mauserwerk) and the bottom number is the date of manufacture.

so ther number 42 would mean it was manufactured by mauserwerk ?

I had to make it bigger...

The number '42' is a manufacturing code as P3 pointed out. These codes were stamped or roll marked on the front rings in order to protect the locations of cities that were manufacturing war materials. Yours is:

Mauser Werke A.G., Oberndorf-am-Neckar

Mauser Werke is the company

A.G. means the company was incorporated

Oberndorf is the city

am Neckar means located on the Neckar river
