Passport question ???
I didn't want to hijack ObiWan's thread about passports, but he reminded me of a question I've been meaning to ask for a while.
The last time I got a passport was about 1968 or 1969. I expect it is long since expired. How old can a passport be to be renewed? In other words, can I renew the old passport, or will I have to do the whole thing from scratch?

It can be renewed if it is not older than 15 years, you must have obtained it after the age of 16 and it must be in your name only!
In the case you stated, you will have to start over.0 -
7 to 10 years, youll need a new photo! call your local post office
They will normally do it for you, if you are in a majore city, get use to waiting a long time!0 -
Start the application now as the process time is still in months. 0 -

Most drug stores (CVS, Walgreens, ect.) do passport photos now. At the CVS next to my work, you can get 6 photos for $7.00. You need to send in two to get the passport, so that leaves you with 4 extras for getting visas or an international driving permit. The PO charges $10 for the 2 that are required for getting the passport.0 -
You all ain't going to believe this but I gave them $98 for a passport and they say my birth certificate isn't good......and I won't be getting a refund of my $98 according to their website.
Their regs say otherwise:
http://foia.state.gov/masterdocs/07fam/07m1360.pdf
It's down near the bottom....they don't issue a passport you should get a refund.

Good luck getting a passport in 6-8 weeks. They are running 3-4 MONTHS behind. I submitted my three childrens application in the beginning of MAY and have not heard a thing from them yet.
My wife called a few weeks ago and was told to expect at least a 3-4 month response time.0 -
My wife mailed her application on April 19th. She wants to leave by July 24th & we can't find out anything. It will soon be too late to buy a ticket even if the passport does get here. I sent letters to Senators Boxer & Feinstein & they said they too were outraged at the mess made by the Bush administration.
Try calling the phone number they have. Most of the time the line is so long they don't even put you on hold. When I finally did get to that point I was on hold for fourty minutes. The person I finally talked to could not tell me anything more than the useless information you get on their website. We have your application & we will get it to you when we damn well please.
I went to the office of Mary Bono on July 9th & they called someone who promised it would be here by the 13th. On the 13th we called Bono's office & they called back to say it would be here by the 20th.
So my wife now has to decide to buy a ticket for $552 that will be worthless if the passport doesn't get here or to give up trying to go.
They have really created one very screwed up mess. Mine took 14 weeks & my wife unfortantly waited another month before she sent for hers. Why in the world should a RENEWAL for passports that had not yet expired take this long? It really is time for the revolution.0 -
Just got my new passport......with the "chip" in it...$112.00 and 10+ weeks just for the passport! Took 8 weeks to get a certified birth record from CA!! Good thing I didn't need a "Death" or "marriage" certificate from CA!!! They said it would take 3 years! 0 -

Costco does them for members for $4.99. We saw the sign yesterday.0 -
The best way to handle it is to go to your downtown post office and pick up the folder to find out what documents are needed to get the new passport.
A certified birth certificate is needed! That means stamped by the state or county of birth.
Then go back and have it done at the downtown post office in most major cities. They do the photos right there and handle all the paperwork. The passport will be mailed to you within a reasonable time frame. They told us 3-8 weeks and we had ours quickly. Prior to the 9/11 issue, though! It now takes longer I have heard!0 -
Passport renewal (last passport less than 15 years ago) can be expedited for an additional $ 60.00. This will take approximately 2 weeks, so they told me last week when I sent it in.
A new passport (including if you have not gotten one for 15 years) can take up to 12 weeks now.0 -
My company does allot of passports and visas for our crew - and I can tell you that if you need your passport anytime soon you had better hop on it now - they are very backlogged. You will need an all new passport with a recent photo. And yes the Post Office can handle this for you, you should be able to get the forms on line.
Good Luck - from Mrs. Likemhot.0
