winchestor 1917
is there more then one place on a Winchester model 1917 were the serial number is located. i had lent a sporterized 1917 to a friend for a deer rifle. well he is moving so he gave it back and for some reason he decided to secure a scope mount with screws and j&b weld. well the j&b weld ran down quit far and ended up covering up the serial number on the front of the receiver. is there another place that it is located. and if not what can i do. can i just have it engraved or re stamped into the received. this never had a scope on it. it was drilled and tapped for one but it must have been a special made one because the rear of the receiver was ground lower then the front. i will post pics later to show what he did but i want to wait to find out if this gun is even legal now with the serial number covered up..
i got lucky. i slowly scraped the jb weld out as much as i could and remover the two screws holding the mount in and as luck would have it i taped it with a hammer and chisel and it came off with out running to much of the Finnish. i got lucky he hadn't prepped the surface for using the jb weld i dont even think he cleaned the oil off the gun.. now to get a new open sight for it. ( the reason he tried to scope it was because the open sights broke. anyway i might just keep the scope mount on it. just with out the jb weld. i dont know why he tried to jb weld it. it has two screws in it. that would be plenty to hold it in.. anyway the gun and the serial numbers are pretty much back to normal
