Ambulance Got Lost Taking Dying Man to Hospital
CHICAGO (AP) -- Officials say the ambulance crew who picked up a dying Chicago Marathon runner apparently got lost on the way to a hospital.
A fire department spokesman says the crew radioed officials saying the runner was in full cardiac arrest. They said they planned to take him to the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center just six blocks from where he collapsed.
A fire official says the ambulance drove a couple blocks the wrong way, then flagged down a city ambulance and got directions. But the crew drove past the UIC hospital because they couldn't find the emergency room entrance. They ended up delivering him to another hospital a few blocks away.
Emergency dispatchers reportedly didn't have maps of marathon road closures.
An autopsy blamed the 35-year-old's death on a heart condition.
